My Pregnant Sister Refused to Remove a White Towel in 92-Degree Heat, Saying, “The Baby Makes Me Cold”—Then One Gust of Wind Lifted It for a Second and Revealed What She’d Been Hiding on Her Leg. But What Frightened Me Most Was Her Husband’s Smile When He Realized I’d Seen It

Part 2 of 3

My father’s fork stopped halfway to his mouth.

“You keep her phone?”

Corbin smiled.

“Only because she asked me to help.”

Tessa stared at her plate.

My father looked toward her.

“Did you ask him to do that?”

There was a long silence.

“It’s easier this way,” she whispered.

Corbin rested his hand against the back of her neck.

I saw his fingers tighten.

Tessa immediately lowered her eyes.

That was when my father noticed it too.

His expression changed.

No one laughed after that.

Behind the Closed Bedroom Door

After lunch, Tessa said she needed to use the restroom.

I followed her into the house.

She didn’t go into the bathroom.

She walked directly into the guest bedroom and closed the door.

Then she sat on the edge of the bed and started crying.

Not loudly.

That made it worse.

She cried as if she had trained herself not to make noise.

I sat beside her.

“How long?”

She shook her head.

“I can’t talk about it.”

“You can talk to me.”

“He’ll say I’m unstable.”

I didn’t interrupt.

She wiped her face.

“He knows a doctor who told him pregnancy can make women emotionally unpredictable. Corbin says if I ever make accusations against him, he’ll use that to prove I’m not capable of caring for the baby.”

“Tessa, he can’t simply decide that.”

“He controls everything, Maren.”

Her voice cracked.

“My checking account. My car. My passwords. Even my medical portal. If I buy something, he gets an alert. If I go somewhere, he knows. He says nobody will believe me because everyone thinks he’s wonderful.”

I reached for her hand.

“I believe you.”

She stared at me.

Those three words seemed to break something open.

“Two nights ago, we argued because I wanted Mom to come to my ultrasound.”

She looked toward the door before continuing.

“He shoved me against the dresser. Then he apologized and brought flowers home the next morning. He told me I was forcing him to become someone he didn’t want to be.”

I felt anger rise through me.

But anger was not what she needed.

She needed a way out.

I pulled out my phone.

For months, I had saved things that hadn’t made sense at the time.

Screenshots Tessa had sent me and later deleted.

Messages from Corbin saying things like, “Remember who pays for everything.”

A short voicemail where his voice could be heard telling her she was imagining things.

Even a copy of the prenuptial agreement Tessa had once asked me to read because one section made her uncomfortable.

“I kept everything,” I told her.

She covered her mouth.

“Why?”

“Because part of me knew you might need it someday.”

A knock came at the door.

Tessa immediately stopped breathing normally.

“Tess?” Corbin called. “Everything okay?”

I squeezed her hand.

“You don’t have to leave with him tonight.”

Her eyes widened.

“He’ll lose it.”

“Then he’ll do it in a house full of witnesses.”

I opened the door.

Corbin stood on the other side.

“She isn’t feeling well,” I said. “She’s staying here tonight.”

His pleasant expression vanished.

“She’s my wife.”

“She’s my sister.”

He stepped closer.

His voice became quieter.

“Be very careful, Maren. You have no idea what you’re getting involved in.”

My phone was still recording.

I looked directly at him.

“I think I’m finally beginning to understand.”

The First Time Tessa Said No

By evening, Corbin had regained his polished public personality.

He offered Tessa tea.

He joked with my uncles.

He asked my mother whether she needed help cleaning the kitchen.

Anyone who had arrived late would have thought he was the most considerate husband in North Carolina.

But I saw the tension in his face.

Meanwhile, Dad made phone calls in his study.

Mom stayed beside Tessa.

I sent copies of everything I had saved to my email, my father, and an attorney named Dana Whitlock, whom I knew through the community organization.

At 7:20, Corbin walked down the hallway carrying Tessa’s suitcase.

“We’re leaving.”

My mother stood.

“Corbin, I think she should stay with us tonight.”

“With respect, this is between my wife and me.”

Then Tessa spoke.

“I’m not going.”

The room became completely silent.

Corbin turned slowly.

“What?”

She was pale, but she remained standing.

“I said I’m staying here.”

He laughed softly.

“Sweetheart, you’re upset. Your sister has filled your head with nonsense.”

“No.”

Tessa’s voice grew stronger.

“She didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know.”

Corbin’s jaw tightened.
