My Pregnant Sister Refused to Remove a White Towel in 92-Degree Heat, Saying, “The Baby Makes Me Cold”—Then One Gust of Wind Lifted It for a Second and Revealed What She’d Been Hiding on Her Leg. But What Frightened Me Most Was Her Husband’s Smile When He Realized I’d Seen It

Part 1 of 3

The White Cover-Up

My sister was four months pregnant when she sat beside a swimming pool on one of the hottest afternoons of the summer, wrapped from her shoulders to her ankles in a thick white beach towel.

It was nearly ninety-two degrees in suburban Raleigh, North Carolina, and everyone else at my mother’s birthday gathering was searching for shade, cold drinks, or an excuse to jump into the pool.

Everyone except my younger sister, Tessa.

“I’m just cold because of the pregnancy,” she said when I asked why she was covered up.

Our mother accepted the explanation immediately.

Our father was busy at the grill.

The cousins continued talking beside the patio.

But I kept watching her.

My name is Maren Colby, and I had known Tessa for thirty-one years. I knew when she was tired, irritated, embarrassed, frightened, or pretending everything was fine.

That afternoon, she was pretending.

Her forehead was damp with sweat. Her hands were gripping the towel so tightly that her knuckles looked pale.

Beside her sat her husband, Corbin Vale, a successful commercial contractor who seemed capable of charming almost anyone within five minutes of meeting them.

He was handsome, polished, and always perfectly dressed.

That afternoon, he wore a pale linen shirt, expensive sunglasses, and a watch that probably cost more than my car.

People loved him.

I never had.

Not because I could explain exactly what was wrong with him.

I simply noticed how often Tessa looked toward him before answering a question.

I noticed that she had stopped meeting me for coffee.

I noticed she had left her job at a pediatric dental office after Corbin said pregnancy meant she needed to “slow down.”

I noticed she had changed her phone number and gradually disappeared from nearly every friendship she once had.

Most importantly, I noticed that my lively younger sister had started speaking as though every sentence required permission.

“Come put your feet in the water,” I called from the pool. “You don’t have to swim.”

Tessa shook her head.

“I’m okay here.”

Corbin laughed.

“Don’t push her, Maren. Pregnancy has made her dramatic lately.”

A few relatives smiled politely.

Tessa didn’t.

I climbed out of the pool and wrapped myself in a robe.

“You’re sweating, Tess.”

“I said I’m fine.”

The words sounded rehearsed.

Corbin tilted his head toward me.

“She knows her own body. You don’t need to turn everything into a psychological case study.”

That was another thing he liked to do.

I worked as a guidance counselor at a public middle school, and Corbin frequently joked that I “diagnosed everyone.”

I ignored him.

Then the wind came.

It wasn’t strong.

Just one brief summer gust crossing the backyard.

But it lifted the bottom corner of Tessa’s towel.

Only for a second.

Long enough.

There were dark marks across the upper part of her left thigh.

Some were fading.

Others were newer.

They did not look like one accidental bump against a table.

Tessa immediately pulled the towel down.

Our eyes met.

Then I looked at Corbin.

He had seen exactly what I had seen.

He wasn’t startled.

He wasn’t embarrassed.

He smiled at me.

It wasn’t a friendly smile.

It felt like a challenge.

As if he were asking what I thought I could possibly do about it.

The Explanation That Came Too Fast

“Tessa, what happened to your leg?”

She looked down.

“I slipped in the bathroom.”

Corbin stood immediately and moved closer to her.

“That’s exactly what happened. She’s been getting dizzy lately.”

I looked at him.

“I asked her.”

His expression hardened for half a second.

Then the smile returned.

“And she answered you.”

Our father glanced over from the grill.

Our mother stopped carrying plates.

Several conversations faded.

Corbin gently placed a hand around Tessa’s shoulder.

Her entire body stiffened.

That reaction told me more than his explanation did.

“Tell your sister you’re okay, sweetheart,” he said.

Tessa swallowed.

“I’m okay, Maren. Please leave it alone.”

I wanted to challenge him right there.

I wanted to demand answers.

Instead, I did something quieter.

I opened the voice recorder on my phone and slipped it into the pocket of my robe.

For several years, I had volunteered with a community organization that helped women rebuild their lives after controlling relationships.

One lesson had stayed with me.

When someone is frightened, forcing them into a confrontation can make everything worse.

So I smiled.

Corbin raised his glass.

“To family.”

I held his gaze.

“To the truth.”

For the first time that afternoon, his smile disappeared.

What Everyone Had Been Missing

Lunch was served beneath the covered patio.

My mother had prepared grilled chicken, corn, salad, baked potatoes, fruit, and enough dessert for twice the number of guests.

Normally Tessa would have sat beside me.

Corbin chose her seat instead.

Throughout lunch, he answered questions for her.

When an aunt asked about the baby, Corbin said, “The doctor says everything is perfect.”

When my father asked whether Tessa planned to return to work after the baby arrived, Corbin said, “She won’t need to work.”

When Mom asked about an upcoming appointment, he replied, “I already have it handled.”

Finally, I asked Tessa, “Did you get the text I sent yesterday?”

She hesitated.

Corbin answered.

“I’ve been keeping her phone for her. Those pregnancy forums were making her anxious.”
