Part 2 of 3

“Mr. Shaw would like to see you.”

Of course he would.

An Offer I Almost Refused

Beckett stood beside the windows when I entered his office.

Downtown Scottsdale stretched below us in the afternoon sun.

“Close the door, Mara.”

That surprised me.

He almost always called me Ms. Ellison.

“Mr. Shaw, I apologize again. My childcare fell through and—”

“I didn’t ask you here because of Lila.”

He pointed toward a chair.

I remained standing.

One eyebrow lifted.

“Now I understand where she gets the stubbornness.”

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

“If you’re going to dismiss me, please do it quickly.”

He actually looked offended.

“Dismiss you? Your daughter just attempted the boldest corporate merger I’ve seen all year.”

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.

Then he placed a folder on his desk.

Inside was a promotion.

Vice President of Creative Strategy.

A substantial salary increase.

A performance bonus.

And three work-from-home days each week.

I stared at him.

“I can’t accept a promotion because you feel sorry for me.”

His expression hardened.

“I don’t pay executive salaries because I feel sorry for people.”

He tapped the folder.

“You earned this six months ago. I was waiting for the restructuring to be approved.”

I said nothing.

“You delivered twenty-three major campaigns in the past year. You rescued the Harrington account. You rebuilt the West Coast team. Do not mistake recognition for charity.”

I looked down quickly because my eyes had started to burn.

Before I could answer, someone knocked.

My assistant stepped inside.

“There’s a gentleman at reception asking for Mara Ellison. His name is Douglas Mercer.”

My stomach dropped.

Douglas was Caleb’s father.

And I had not seen him in nearly two years.

Why My Father-in-Law Suddenly Returned

Douglas entered without offering me a greeting.

He was sixty-five, impeccably dressed, and carrying a leather folder.

“Mara, my attorney filed for temporary guardianship of Lila this morning.”

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“You did what?”

“You’re overwhelmed. You work constantly. You’re behind financially. Now you’re bringing her into an office because you have nowhere else to leave her.”

My hands went cold.

“You have visited her twice in almost two years.”

His jaw tightened.

“That is going to change.”

“Why now?”

He ignored the question.

“Caleb would have wanted stability for his daughter.”

That sentence hurt more than I wanted him to know.

Beckett remained silent.

Douglas finally noticed him.

“This is a family matter.”

Beckett’s voice stayed calm.

“Then I suggest you discuss it somewhere other than my office.”

Douglas looked at me.

“You should have accepted our offer when you had the chance.”

Then he left.

The room remained quiet.

Beckett turned toward me.

“What offer?”

I looked at my phone.

There was already a message from Caleb’s sister, Vanessa.

You should have cooperated.

That was when I finally understood.

“They don’t suddenly want Lila,” I whispered.

“What do they want?”

I swallowed.

“Her trust.”

Eighteen Million Reasons

Caleb’s family owned a regional construction supply company outside Tucson.

Before our daughter was born, Caleb had received shares from his grandfather.

Those shares eventually became part of a trust established for Lila.

Douglas had been named trustee.

I had rarely questioned it because the money was not supposed to become available to Lila until adulthood.

Beckett asked one simple question.

“Have you ever seen a complete statement?”

I shook my head.

That afternoon, he made one phone call—not to give me money, not to promise he would fix everything, but to introduce me to someone who could help me understand what was happening.

Her name was Tessa Monroe, a trust and family-law attorney.

She arrived less than an hour later.

After reviewing the paperwork, she asked:

“Why would Douglas suddenly seek guardianship now?”

Two days later, we had the answer.

The family company was being partially sold.

Lila’s shares were about to generate a distribution worth roughly $1.2 million.

My hands went numb when Tessa explained it.

“If Douglas gains greater authority over Lila’s finances, he could potentially influence how that money is managed.”

“Then review everything,” I said.

The deeper Tessa looked, the worse it became.

Companies connected to Douglas had charged questionable consulting fees to Lila’s trust.

Vanessa had been paid for services with almost no supporting documentation.

Several personal expenses appeared to have been reimbursed through accounts connected to the trust.

The people accusing me of being financially irresponsible had been quietly benefiting from my daughter’s money.

Six Weeks of Preparation

The hearing was scheduled six weeks later.

During those weeks, I worked harder than I ever had.

But this time, I was not alone.

Tessa prepared the legal records.

I prepared something equally important.

Lila’s school reports.

Medical records.

Messages from teachers.

Childcare receipts.

Photos from birthdays.

Dentist appointments.

Swimming lessons.

Parent conferences.

Every ordinary detail that made up a real childhood.

Beckett offered to attend the hearing.

Then he changed his mind for a reason I never forgot.

“I’ll wait outside.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want anyone claiming you won because a wealthy man stood behind you.”

He paused.
