Two Days Later, We Discovered What He Was Really After

Part 1 of 3

The Morning I Had No Choice

“You’re way too handsome to be alone. You should be my dad.”

My six-year-old daughter said those words in the executive hallway of one of the most expensive office towers in Scottsdale, Arizona.

For several seconds, the entire floor went silent.

I stood twenty feet away holding a presentation folder against my chest, wondering whether I had just watched my career disappear in front of me.

The man she was speaking to was Beckett Shaw, the thirty-eight-year-old founder and CEO of Shaw & Finch, one of the Southwest’s fastest-growing luxury branding firms.

People in our office had many words for Beckett.

Brilliant.

Demanding.

Private.

Intimidating.

Friendly was rarely one of them.

Yet there he stood in his perfectly tailored navy suit, looking down at my daughter as if no one had ever spoken to him quite like that before.

Then something even stranger happened.

He laughed.

Not the polite little laugh executives gave during awkward meetings.

A real laugh.

Deep, surprised, completely unguarded.

In three years of working for him, I had never heard that sound.

And somehow, my daughter Lila had managed to produce it in less than five minutes.

My name is Mara Ellison. I was thirty-four years old, a senior creative director, a widow, and a mother who had spent the last three years convincing everyone—including myself—that I could handle everything alone.

That morning, however, everything had gone wrong before sunrise.

At 5:12 a.m., my babysitter called to say her apartment building had a major plumbing problem and she could not leave.

My father was visiting relatives in Oregon.

My closest friend was traveling for work.

Lila’s school was closed for a teacher training day.

And I had the biggest client presentation of the quarter scheduled for ten.

There was simply no one else to call.

So I packed coloring books, snacks, headphones, her tablet, and Mr. Button, the stuffed rabbit she had slept with since she was two.

Before we left our townhouse, I knelt in front of her.

“Today, you are going to be the quietest little person in Arizona.”

She considered that carefully.

“Like a ninja?”

“Exactly like a ninja.”

“Can ninjas eat crackers?”

“Yes.”

“Can ninjas watch cartoons?”

“With headphones.”

She smiled.

“Can ninjas talk to your grumpy boss?”

I pointed at her.

“Absolutely not.”

I should have known that was exactly what she would do.

The Hallway Conversation

For the first hour, Lila was perfect.

I settled her inside my office with snacks, coloring pencils, and her tablet.

Then my assistant appeared in the doorway.

“The client moved the presentation forward. Conference Room One in ten minutes.”

I crouched beside Lila.

“Stay right here. No exploring.”

She nodded seriously.

“What if exploring finds me?”

I should have recognized that answer as a warning.

The meeting lasted nineteen minutes.

By minute twelve, some invisible maternal alarm inside me had started ringing.

By minute seventeen, I knew something was wrong.

The second the meeting ended, I hurried back toward my office.

Her chair was empty.

Then I heard laughter from the executive corridor.

Beckett’s laughter.

I rounded the corner and nearly dropped my folder.

Lila stood outside his private office, holding Mr. Button under one arm.

Beckett was crouched in front of her.

She was studying him with the seriousness of someone evaluating a potential employee.

“You’re tall,” she announced.

Beckett nodded.

“I’ve been told.”

“And you have nice hair.”

“That’s new.”

Then she delivered the sentence that stopped half the office.

“You’re too handsome to be alone. You should be my dad.”

“Lila!”

She turned.

“Hi, Mom. I made a friend.”

I wanted the polished stone floor to open beneath my feet.

Beckett slowly stood.

His expression became professional again, but there was still amusement in his eyes.

“Miss Ellison, your daughter has presented a surprisingly direct proposal.”

“Mr. Shaw, I am so sorry.”

Lila frowned.

“Why? He didn’t say no yet.”

Someone behind me coughed to hide a laugh.

Beckett looked back at Lila.

“Why exactly do you think your mother needs me to become your dad?”

That was when everything changed.

Lila stopped smiling.

She hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“Because Mom cries sometimes when she thinks I’m asleep.”

My breath caught.

Beckett’s smile disappeared.

The Red Envelopes

“She cries?” Beckett asked softly.

Lila nodded.

“Mostly when the red letters come.”

I felt heat rise into my face.

Those “red letters” were payment reminders and overdue notices I had hidden inside a kitchen drawer.

Three years earlier, my husband, Caleb, had passed away unexpectedly after a road accident.

I had loved him deeply.

But grief had not been the only thing he left behind.

There were medical expenses, personal loans I had known little about, and business obligations that had become my responsibility after his passing.

My salary was good.

But childcare, housing, insurance, school expenses, and old bills seemed to consume every dollar before I could breathe.

I never discussed those problems at work.

I never wanted anyone’s sympathy.

Especially Beckett Shaw’s.

“Sweetheart, we don’t need to discuss that here,” I said.

Lila looked back at Beckett.

“Mom says she doesn’t need a husband.”

I closed my eyes.

“Lila.”

“But she does need someone who can make coffee because hers tastes terrible.”

A laugh came from a nearby desk.

Even Beckett’s mouth twitched.

“That does sound serious.”

“Very serious.”

I guided Lila toward my office.

“Come on, future ninja.”

Before leaving, she pointed at Beckett.

“Think about it.”

Fifteen minutes later, my assistant appeared again.
