Derek took the document from her.

“What is this?”

I answered calmly.

“The record showing that I sold the house two weeks before you tried to.”

His eyes snapped toward me.

“You sold it?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

“It was my property.”

His voice rose.

“I’m your husband!”

I didn’t raise mine.

“Being my husband never made you the owner.”

The Problem Was Bigger Than the House

Naomi explained that Derek’s attempted transaction could not be completed because the property already had legitimate new owners.

Any money exchanged during his attempted deal would now have to be addressed, and he would have to explain why he had represented himself as having authority over a property that wasn’t his to sell.

Derek slowly sat down.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

“You knew it was never in your name.”

Colleen suddenly turned toward me.

“You let him do this!”

For a moment, I couldn’t believe what I had heard.

“Excuse me?”

“You knew he was trying to sell it, and you didn’t warn him!”

I looked down at my daughter.

Then I looked back at Colleen.

“A wife shouldn’t have to protect her husband from the consequences of a plan he secretly created against her.”

The room became completely silent.

Derek said nothing.

Maybe because there was nothing left to say.

At least, that was what I believed then.

I was wrong.

The $200 Offer

After leaving the hospital, I returned briefly to the house because the purchase agreement allowed me time to collect my remaining belongings.

Colleen was already there.

A document was waiting on the kitchen table.

“Sign this,” she said.

I read the first few lines.

“What is it?”

“A statement saying you agreed to Derek’s transaction.”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

Derek walked over and placed an envelope beside the paper.

That was the envelope containing two hundred dollars.

“Then take this and leave.”

I stared at him.

“Where exactly do you expect me to go with your newborn daughter?”

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Colleen answered for him.

“Find a small room somewhere. You should appreciate that Derek is giving you anything at all.”

That was when I laughed.

The same laugh that had confused them moments earlier.

I held up the money.

“You really think two hundred dollars is going to make me disappear from a three-million-dollar house?”

“It’s not your house anymore,” Colleen snapped.

“You’re right.”

Derek seemed relieved.

“Then stop complicating everything.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“But there’s one problem. The house you just tried to sell had already…”

I deliberately stopped.

Derek stepped toward me.

“Already what?”

Before I could finish, someone knocked on the front door.

Naomi opened it.

A second attorney stood outside.

He represented the couple who had legally purchased my home.

He carried a thick folder.

He walked into the kitchen and placed it directly in front of Derek.

“Mr. Langford, before we discuss the $850,000 transaction you attempted to arrange, there is another matter that needs to be clarified.”

Derek opened the folder.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

The confidence disappeared from his face.

Colleen leaned over his shoulder.

“What does it say?”

Derek didn’t answer.

I watched his hands tighten around the papers.

That was when I finally understood something I had missed.

Selling my house had never been the entire plan.

Derek hadn’t simply wanted the money.

He desperately needed it.

And whatever was inside that folder was connected to the reason he had been willing to sell a three-million-dollar home for less than a third of its value while his wife was giving birth.

I held Sophie closer.

For weeks, I had believed the betrayal began when Derek started asking about my father’s house.

I was about to discover that it had started much earlier.

And the house was only the first secret to come into the light.

Sometimes the first sign that a relationship is changing is not a dramatic argument, but a series of small questions that suddenly make you wonder why someone you trust has become so interested in what belongs to you.
