Mark was listed as the guarantor.

Suddenly, the $52,000 wasn’t just missing money.

It was part of a plan.

While I had been painting Emily’s nursery, my husband had apparently been helping finance another life.

But Daniel had one more thing.

He opened the blue folder and handed me a printed copy of a message exchange.

Lauren had written:

Does Sarah actually think you’re going home after Europe?

Mark’s response was underneath it.

Of course. She always takes me back.

I read those five words three times.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“He thinks I’m waiting for him.”

Daniel took a slow drink of coffee.

“Then maybe you should let him keep thinking that.”

The following night, Mark texted me.

Flying home tomorrow. Let’s put all this drama behind us.

I stared at the message for a long time.

Then I wrote:

Safe flight.

PART TWO

“I’m Your Husband Again”

Mark walked into the house at 3:17 the next afternoon.

I was standing in the kitchen.

Daniel was seated where Mark couldn’t see him from the front door.

Mark dropped the chocolates on the console.

“I got it out of my system,” he said. “I needed to get away, Sarah. But I’m here now. I’m your husband again.”

Then he saw Daniel.

Mark stopped walking.

“What the hell is he doing in my house?”

Daniel raised his coffee.

“Hi, Mark.”

Mark looked from him to me.

“You’ve been talking to this guy behind my back?”

I almost laughed at the choice of words.

Instead, I asked, “How long have you been sleeping with Lauren?”

His expression changed.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

“It’s not that simple.”

“Then make it simple.”

Mark lowered his voice.

“Our marriage hasn’t been good for a long time.”

“How long?”

“Since Emily was born, at least.”

I nodded.

“That’s interesting, because I found hotel charges from when I was still pregnant with her.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he did exactly what Rebecca had warned me he might do.

He rewrote the marriage.

According to Mark, I had become distant after having children. I was always tired. Everything revolved around the girls. We never went anywhere. I wasn’t affectionate enough.

“I’m not saying what I did was right,” he told me. “I’m saying there were reasons.”

Daniel stood.

“I think I’ve heard enough.”

As he passed Mark, he stopped.

“For what it’s worth, Lauren gave me almost the same speech about me.”

Then he left.

The Story Mark Told Everyone Else

Within days, Mark began calling relatives.

His version was carefully polished.

We had “mutually decided to take some time apart.”

Our marriage had been “struggling for months.”

He had “made a mistake” during a period when both of us were emotionally overwhelmed.

His mother called me.

“Mark is very concerned about how you’re handling everything.”

I sat at the kitchen table looking at the same blue folder Daniel had left with me.

“What did he tell you?”

There was a pause.

“He said you’ve been having a difficult time since the baby.”

There it was.

If I screamed, I became unstable.

If I posted screenshots online, I became vindictive.

If I called everyone Mark had already contacted, I became the woman desperately trying to control the story.

So I did nothing publicly.

Rebecca and I handled what mattered privately.

Then Mark’s birthday came.

Months earlier, his parents had arranged a dinner at an upscale steakhouse downtown. His parents, sister, two business partners and several close friends would be there.

Mark called me two days before.

“My parents expect you to come.”

“Why?”

“Because regardless of what’s happening between us, we’re still family.”

“I’m not pretending we’re together.”

He sighed.

“Fine. Do whatever you want. But if you don’t show up, people are going to draw their own conclusions about how you’re doing.”

I hung up.

Then I called my mother.

“Can you keep the girls Saturday night?”

“Of course.”

I thanked her.

Before hanging up, she said, “Wear the blue dress.”

The Birthday Dinner

I arrived after everyone had been seated.

Mark’s mother smiled with visible relief when she saw me.

Mark smiled too.

He thought my presence meant surrender.

He pulled out the chair beside him.

I sat at the other end of the table.

For half an hour, everyone discussed ordinary things: schools, work, football, someone’s upcoming trip to Florida.

Then Mark raised his glass.

“It’s been a difficult year for Sarah and me.”

The table quieted.

“Marriage isn’t always easy. We both pulled away from each other, and I made mistakes. I’m hoping we can stop punishing each other and start healing as a family.”

His mother touched his arm.

I took a sip of wine.

“That was nice.”

Mark relaxed.

“Thank you.”

“I just need you to clear up one thing.”

His expression tightened.

“Sarah, not here.”

“You just discussed our marriage in front of everyone.”

Nobody touched their food.

I looked at his mother.

“When did Mark tell you we’d mutually agreed to separate?”

She glanced at her son.

“After he went to stay with Jason.”

I nodded.

“Jason.”

Then I looked at Mark.

“So maybe you can explain why you told me you were staying with Jason when you were actually in Paris.”

His father put down his fork.

“Paris?”

Mark leaned back.

“I went away for a few days to think.”

“With Lauren Carter.”

His mother’s face changed.

Mark looked around the table.
