Part 2 of 3

“His mother, brother, two relatives, and Sienna.”

Melissa exhaled.

“Don’t touch the money.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Don’t text Julian. Don’t call him. Don’t explain anything.”

“Okay.”

“I’m filing tonight.”

I closed my eyes.

Leo moved against me.

“For custody?”

“Custody, temporary financial restraints, and preservation of records. We’ll deal with the rest after I see exactly what you signed.”

I opened my eyes again.

The envelope was still there.

“Melissa?”

“Yes?”

“There’s something else.”

I told her where I believed the $200,000 had come from.

The Money Wasn’t His

I had noticed the transaction twelve days before my scheduled delivery.

$200,000 had left an investment account funded during our marriage.

It moved first into an account connected to one of the Vance companies.

Then it moved again.

Julian apparently believed the second transfer made the money his.

It didn’t.

At least, not automatically.

I had saved the statements.

Melissa already had copies.

“You’re sure the amount was exactly two hundred thousand?” she asked.

“Exactly.”

“And that’s the amount in the agreement?”

“Yes.”

Another silence.

“Clara, I’m going to ask you this once. Did you know he was going to offer you that money today?”

“No.”

“So when you saw the agreement—”

“I connected the amount.”

Melissa gave a short breath.

“Okay.”

That was all she said.

At 8:17 that evening, Julian texted me anyway.

I followed Melissa’s instructions and didn’t answer.

You made the right decision. The boys will have everything they need.

Twenty minutes later:

Mom says you handled today better than expected. Thank you for being reasonable.

I took screenshots and sent them to Melissa.

At 10:43, another message arrived.

Sienna and I will give them a stable home. You can start fresh.

I stared at that one for a while.

Oliver was sleeping beside me.

Leo had one fist pressed against his cheek.

Three days old.

Julian was already describing their future as though I were someone who had briefly passed through it.

I forwarded the message.

Then I put my phone facedown.

The next morning, a hospital administrator visited my room.

Melissa had requested that the hospital preserve security footage from the previous afternoon.

The administrator couldn’t give it directly to me, but she confirmed that cameras covered the hallway outside my room and part of the doorway.

The nurse’s notes had also been preserved.

So had Rachel’s report.

By noon, Melissa called.

“We got temporary orders.”

I sat up too quickly and felt the incision pull.

“What does that mean?”

“The twins stay with you. Julian cannot remove them from your care. Neither of you can move or hide marital assets, and relevant financial records have to be preserved.”

I looked at the two bassinets.

“He can’t take them?”

“Not under this order.”

I put my hand over my mouth.

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Melissa waited.

Finally I asked:

“Does Julian know?”

“He’s being served.”

That happened forty-three minutes later.

I know because Julian called me six times.

I didn’t answer.

Then Diane called.

Then Mark.

Then Julian again.

Finally a text appeared.

What the hell did you do?

I read it twice.

Three days earlier, I would have answered immediately.

I would have tried to explain myself.

Instead, I took a screenshot.

Then another message arrived.

You signed the agreement.

I forwarded that one too.

A minute later:

Clara, answer your phone.

I didn’t.

Across the room, the same white envelope still sat where Julian had left it.

Nobody had touched the $200,000.

That afternoon, Melissa sent me a copy of the temporary order.

At the top were Leo’s and Oliver’s names.

Underneath them was mine.

For the moment, the boys were staying with me.

The financial accounts were protected.

The hospital records were preserved.

And the document Julian had expected to end everything had instead given my attorney a written record of exactly what he had tried to do.

I folded the court order once and placed it beneath the envelope on the tray.

For the first time since Julian had walked into that room, the $200,000 was no longer an offer.

It was evidence.

The Video Julian Couldn’t Explain

Julian arrived at the temporary custody hearing with two attorneys.

I arrived with Melissa.

That was the first thing I noticed when I walked into the county courthouse six weeks after leaving the hospital.

The second was Sienna.

She sat behind Julian wearing a gray blazer, her hands folded over the same expensive handbag she’d carried into my hospital room.

Julian didn’t look at me.

I was grateful for that.

Leo and Oliver were home with my sister and a sitter Melissa had recommended. It was the longest I’d been away from them since their birth, and I had checked my phone four times before we even entered the courtroom.

Melissa touched my elbow.

“They’re fine.”

“I know.”

“Then stay here with me.”

I put my phone away.

Julian wanted the temporary custody order changed. His attorneys argued that I’d voluntarily signed an agreement acknowledging that he should have primary custody.

They described the hospital meeting as calm.

Planned.

Mutual.

One attorney actually used the phrase “amicable resolution.”

Melissa didn’t interrupt.

She waited.

Then the hospital footage played.

There was no audio, but there didn’t need to be.

I saw myself through the open doorway, pale and swollen, sitting upright in a hospital bed with Leo against my chest.

Julian stood over me.

Diane stood beside him.

Sienna was behind them.

Four other people crowded the room.

The video showed Julian placing the folder on my tray.

Then the envelope.

Then the pen.

It showed me reading while everyone waited.

It showed Diane stepping closer.

It showed Julian pointing to the page.

And it showed me signing while holding my three-day-old son.

Nobody in the courtroom spoke.

Melissa paused the recording.

“Mrs. Vance had undergone a C-section seventy-two hours earlier.”

Julian’s attorney stood.

“The medical procedure itself is not evidence that—”

The judge raised a hand.

He sat down.

Melissa introduced the nurse’s notes.

Then Rachel’s report.

Rachel had written down the exact question she’d asked after Julian left.

Did you feel pressured to sign these documents?

My answer was there.

Yes.

Then Melissa displayed Julian’s texts.

You made the right decision.

The boys will have everything they need.

Sienna and I will give them a stable home. You can start fresh.

Julian finally looked at me.

I didn’t look back.

His attorney tried to argue that the messages showed Julian believed we had reached an agreement.

Melissa nodded.

“We agree.”

That surprised him.

She continued.

“Mr. Vance absolutely believed he had an agreement. The question is how he obtained it, what he concealed before obtaining it, and why the agreement contains a clause preventing my client from examining specific financial accounts.”

That was when Julian stopped looking calm.

The $200,000 Made Its Way Back to Me

Melissa didn’t explain every account I’d examined.

She didn’t need to.

She showed one sequence.

Our marital investment account.

A transfer of $200,000.

A Vance-controlled business account.

Then another transfer.

Finally, the money Julian presented to me as his personal offer.

The judge looked at Julian.

“Mr. Vance, where did these funds originate?”

Julian leaned toward his attorney.

They whispered.

Then Julian answered.

“They came through my family’s business.”

Melissa slid a statement forward.

“Before that.”
