“Does anything happening at home create a vulnerability for this division?”

“Possibly,” I replied. “My husband attempted an unauthorized financial action involving my home. My attorney is preserving the records.”

His expression tightened.

“You will report the situation to internal security today, and you will not return to a residence accessible to the people involved.”

“Yes, sir.”

He paused before adding, “Competence does not require you to endure everything alone.”

For years, I had believed that as long as I continued performing well, the trouble inside my marriage remained manageable. I had mistaken endurance for strength and silence for dignity.

When I left his office, my phone showed nineteen missed calls.

Brandon’s first message read, “Where are you? My card isn’t working.”

Marjorie’s said, “Stop this childish display and come home.”

I sent one response.

“All further communication concerning finances and separation will go through my attorney.”

That evening, I locked the door of a modest government apartment and sat on the edge of the bed. The room had plain curtains, a narrow desk, and a refrigerator that hummed too loudly, yet the silence belonged entirely to me.

For the first time in years, I did not have to brace myself before breathing.

The Woman Behind the Plan

Audrey’s investigation uncovered a detail neither of us expected. A mortgage officer named Graham Foster had preserved emails connected to Brandon’s application, and one name appeared repeatedly as a referral contact: Evelyn Sloane.

Evelyn was the polished white American wife of Martin Sloane, a senior federal cybersecurity official who had also been considered for my new position. At my appointment ceremony, she had smiled warmly while asking whether Brandon struggled with having such an “unusually ambitious wife.”

According to the records, Evelyn had contacted Brandon three months before my selection became public.

The following afternoon, Brandon arrived at my workplace carrying a bakery bag. I agreed to meet him only in a glass-walled conference room, with Caroline stationed nearby and the conversation documented.

“I brought the cinnamon pastry you like,” he said.

“I stopped eating those six years ago.”

He pushed the bag aside.

“I came to apologize for Mom losing control.”

“And what are you apologizing for?”

His eyes dropped. “I was tired. I said things badly.”

“You supported her. You also tried to borrow against my house.”

His expression changed before he could hide it.

“It was only an option,” he said. “Evelyn told me it was standard.”

The name escaped him so naturally that he seemed not to realize what he had revealed.

“When did Evelyn Sloane first contact you?”

He hesitated. “Three months ago.”

That was well before I had received formal notice of my appointment.

“What did she tell you?”

“She said you planned to leave me once you became director. She said you would force Mom out and claim I was unstable.”

“And instead of asking me, you helped prepare documents against my property.”

“I was protecting myself.”

“From a story told to you by a woman you hardly knew.”

He rubbed his face, suddenly looking less like a husband demanding authority and more like a frightened man who had followed someone else’s map into a place he could not escape.

“Evelyn understood how it felt to be married to someone consumed by a career.”

“No, Brandon. She understood what you feared, and she used it.”

He looked toward the glass wall.

“Mom wasn’t supposed to cut everything,” he murmured. “She said she would scare you enough to make you reconsider.”

“And you did nothing to stop her.”

He had no answer.

I closed my notebook. “This meeting is over.”

As I stood, he spoke again.

“Evelyn had information about your security interviews, your schedule, even your father.”

My hand stopped on the chair.

My father, William Mercer, had worked in federal disaster logistics during the late 1990s. He rarely spoke about that period, and after he passed away from a sudden heart condition when I was twenty-four, his silence became one of the many questions our family had learned to carry.

“What did she say about him?”
