The Doctors Quietly Told Me I Had Only a Few Days Left to Live, but Before My Heart Finally Gave Out, My Young Wife Walked Into My Hospital Room Thinking I Was Already in a Coma and Whispered, “Just a Little Longer and Everything Will Finally Be Ours”—She Had No Idea I Heard Every Single Word

Part 2 of 3

They expected the inheritance to be a formality.

Nothing more.

After the final guest left the cemetery, Vanessa turned to Richard.

“When do we read the will?”

Richard answered calmly.

“Tomorrow morning.”

She nodded once.

“Good. I want to finish the paperwork as soon as possible.”

She never asked about my company.

She never asked about my employees.

She never asked whether I had left behind personal letters or family keepsakes.

She only wanted to know how quickly everything could become hers.

The Reading That Changed Everything

The following morning, Richard welcomed Vanessa into his conference room.

She arrived nearly twenty minutes early.

Julian waited across the street inside a coffee shop where he could watch the office entrance through the window.

Vanessa carried a leather folder.

Inside were handwritten lists.

Properties.

Investment accounts.

Luxury cars.

Vacation homes.

She had already written notes beside each one.

Sell.

Keep.

Transfer.

Richard noticed the list but said nothing.

When everyone was seated, he opened the sealed estate documents.

“Mrs. Vance, before we begin, I need to inform you that Arthur executed a new estate plan three days before his death.”

Vanessa frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

Richard slid certified copies across the table.

“These documents were signed in the hospital.”

She barely looked at them.

“Arthur wasn’t capable of changing anything.”

“His attending physician certified that he was fully alert and legally competent.”

Richard continued reading.

My home.

My investment accounts.

My ownership in Vance Interiors.

My retirement portfolio.

Everything had been transferred into a trust.

The trustee was Caleb Miller.

Vanessa blinked.

Then she laughed.

Not because she found it amusing.

Because she thought Richard had made a mistake.

“Who?”

“Caleb Miller.”

“The hospital orderly?”

“Yes.”

She stood so quickly her chair crashed onto the floor.

“Absolutely not.”

Richard calmly continued.

The trust required Caleb to preserve the company whenever reasonably possible, provide immediate funding for Mia Miller’s heart surgery, and eventually establish the Arthur Vance Pediatric Heart Foundation.

Vanessa slammed both hands onto the conference table.

“That boy manipulated Arthur.”

“He stole everything.”

Richard closed the document.

“Mr. Vance anticipated that allegation.”

He reached into another folder.

“Before his death, he left additional evidence.”

My Own Wife Became the Witness Against Herself

Richard placed a small digital recorder on the table.

He pressed Play.

Vanessa immediately recognized her own voice.

“I’ve been adding extra digoxin to his medication.”

Julian’s voice followed.

“You’re sure nobody suspects?”

Then Vanessa laughed.

“His heart was already failing.”

Richard let the recording continue.

The room became completely silent.

Vanessa’s breathing grew heavier.

When the recording reached her final confession—

“You should have died months ago.”

—Richard pressed Stop.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Finally Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s fake.”

Richard looked directly at her.

“A forensic laboratory can determine that.”

She pointed toward the recorder.

“Caleb edited it.”

“Mr. Miller wasn’t even present during that conversation.”

“Arthur imagined it.”

Richard slowly opened another folder.

Inside was the physician’s written evaluation completed immediately before I signed the new estate documents.

“According to Dr. Helen Brooks, Arthur Vance was alert, oriented, and fully capable of making legal decisions.”

He placed another document beside it.

The witness signatures.

Then another.

The notary certification.

Vanessa’s confidence disappeared piece by piece.

For the first time since entering the office, she looked frightened.

Her phone vibrated.

Julian.

She ignored the call.

Then it rang again.

Richard quietly folded his hands.

“Mrs. Vance, I’ve already provided copies of these recordings to law enforcement.”

She stared at him.

“You called the police?”

“Before this meeting began.”

She grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.”

Richard nodded.

“That’s your choice.”

She hurried toward the door.

When she opened it, two detectives were already waiting outside.

One stepped forward.

“Mrs. Vanessa Vance?”

She froze.

“We’d like to ask you several questions regarding Arthur Vance’s death.”

She forced a smile.

“Of course.”

But her voice had changed.

The confidence was gone.

Caleb Refused to Celebrate

While detectives questioned Vanessa, Caleb was sitting beside Mia’s hospital bed.

He still hadn’t touched a single dollar from the trust.

Mia looked pale but managed a smile.

“Did everything go okay?”

Caleb smiled back.

“It’s complicated.”

She looked at him carefully.

“You look tired.”

He laughed quietly.

“I’ve had a strange week.”

She reached for his hand.

“You still haven’t told me why everyone keeps calling.”

Before Caleb could answer, Richard walked into the room carrying the trust documents.

He shook Caleb’s hand.

“It’s official.”

Caleb looked down at the folder without opening it.

“Arthur trusted the wrong person.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“He trusted the right person after trusting the wrong one.”

Caleb remained silent.

Richard sat beside him.

“Arthur didn’t leave you eighty-two million dollars because you were poor.”

“He left it because he believed you would know what to do with it.”

Caleb looked toward Mia.

She had fallen asleep again.

Machines quietly monitored her heartbeat.

After several moments, he finally spoke.

“The first payment goes to her surgery.”

Richard smiled.

“Arthur expected you’d say that.”

Caleb nodded.
