I sat beside her.
“I’m sorry I didn’t notice what was happening.”
“You didn’t push me, Dad.”
“No. But I should’ve listened better.”
THE NAME I’D NEVER HEARD
The following afternoon, Thomas called.
His team had discovered a suspicious request to release technical documentation to an outside company.
The request appeared to carry my authorization, but it hadn’t followed normal approval procedures.
Fortunately, someone had flagged it before any protected information was released.
“Do you know who submitted it?” I asked.
“We’re still investigating. But the authorization doesn’t match our records.”
After the call, Daniela asked me to sit beside her.
“Dad, I remembered something about that man.”
“What?”
“He called Mom by another name.”
“What name?”
“Elena. He said, ‘Elena, we have to do this before Javier comes back.’”
I stared at her.
For twenty-two years, I’d known my wife as Patricia Morales.
I’d never heard anyone call her Elena.
Then Daniela added something worse.
“He said you’d notice the missing money.”
I opened our joint banking app.
Patricia had always managed most household expenses. I checked balances, but rarely examined every transaction.
Now I began scrolling.
Several unfamiliar transfers appeared.
Then I found a large payment to a company called Vega Industrial Consulting.
There were others.
I contacted the bank about securing our accounts and forwarded the transaction information to Andrés.
“I think I know why Patricia wanted Daniela’s car,” I told him.
“Don’t jump to conclusions yet,” he replied. “We need to establish who Vega is, where the money went, and what they intended to do with your signature.”
I looked again at the security footage.
The stranger stood in my office.
Patricia held the pen.
And my daughter lay unconscious only a few steps away.
I had no intention of confronting my wife before protecting Daniela and preserving the evidence.
But I needed to understand how far this had gone.
PART 2 — THE TRUTH BEHIND THE BLACK FOLDER
Two weeks later, Andrés called with news.
“We’ve identified the man. His name is Roberto Vega. He’s connected to a small industrial consulting business.”
Daniela and I were staying in a furnished apartment near her university.
“Is that the same business receiving our money?”
“Yes. And the transfers appear to be connected to an investment arrangement Patricia entered into several months ago.”
“What investment?”
“One promising unusually high returns. We’re still reviewing the records, but it appears she lost a substantial amount.”
I sat down.
Patricia had spent years criticizing unnecessary purchases. She compared grocery prices and complained whenever Daniela spent money on something she considered frivolous.
Yet she’d secretly transferred thousands of dollars into a business I’d never heard of.
“How much did she lose?”
Andrés gave me the preliminary figure.
It was considerably more than Daniela’s car was worth.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“I can’t answer that. But the records suggest she kept investing after the losses began.”
Suddenly, Patricia’s behavior made more sense.
She hadn’t wanted Daniela’s car because our daughter needed to contribute to household expenses.
She wanted money she could obtain quickly.
And when Daniela refused, Patricia tried to take control of the vehicle herself.
THE MESSAGES FROM MY WIFE
With professional assistance, we reviewed our finances.
Some transactions were ordinary household expenses. Others involved repeated transfers to accounts connected with Roberto’s business.
There was no clear evidence that the investments were protected or that the promised returns had materialized.
Patricia appeared to have believed she could recover her losses by sending more money.
When that failed, she became desperate.
Then the messages started.
Javier, we need to talk. This is all a misunderstanding.
I showed the message to Andrés.
He advised me to keep relevant communication in writing and avoid direct confrontation.
The next morning, Patricia sent another.
Roberto lied to me. I was trying to recover our savings. You have no idea what kind of pressure I’ve been under.
I read it twice.
There was no mention of Daniela.
No question about her concussion.
No concern about whether she was sleeping, eating, or returning to class.
Just explanations for Patricia’s decisions.
Later, another message arrived.
You can’t throw away twenty-two years of marriage over one mistake.
I put down my phone.
One mistake?
She’d pushed our daughter, taken her keys, left her unconscious, and continued a secret meeting in my office.
I couldn’t reduce that to a misunderstanding.
Across the kitchen table, Daniela was working on an engineering assignment.
“Is that Mom?” she asked.
I nodded.
“What’s she saying?”
“She’s trying to explain what happened.”
Daniela looked down.
“Does she think I wanted any of this?”
“I don’t know, sweetheart.”
“I just wanted to keep my car.”
Her voice was barely audible.
I reached across the table.
“And you had every right to.”
She looked at me.
“What if she tells everyone I ruined our family?”
“Then she’ll be wrong.”
“But people might believe her.”
I considered that.
“Some people may only hear her side. We can’t control that. We can tell the truth and let the evidence speak for itself.”
She nodded slowly.
That evening, I asked Andrés to begin divorce proceedings.
I didn’t want revenge.
I wanted a fair legal resolution and a safe future for Daniela.
WHY ROBERTO NEEDED MY SIGNATURE
The corporate investigation continued separately.
Thomas called after his team completed a preliminary review.
“We believe someone attempted to obtain technical documentation using an authorization that appeared to come from you.”
“But I never signed anything.”
“We know. The signature and approval process didn’t match our records.”
“Did they receive anything?”
“No protected technical information was released through that request. The recipient flagged inconsistencies before processing it.”
I finally exhaled.
“Do you know what they intended to do with the documents?”
“Not conclusively. Our legal team is reviewing that with the appropriate authorities.”
The investigation connected Roberto’s consulting business to the suspicious request.
The documents Patricia had been practicing my signature on were intended to make the authorization appear legitimate.
The plan depended on someone accepting that apparent approval without verifying it.
Fortunately, that hadn’t happened.
Thomas was careful not to speculate beyond the evidence.
“Javier, reporting this immediately was the right decision. We’re strengthening our verification procedures.”
After the call, I sat quietly.
For twenty-two years, Patricia had known my schedule, where I kept important paperwork, and how often I traveled.
I’d never imagined she might use that familiarity against me.
But the potential damage to my career wasn’t what troubled me most.
It was remembering Daniela lying on the floor.
Patricia had seen our daughter unconscious and still chosen to continue with her meeting.
Whatever financial pressure she’d been under, nothing justified that.
WHO WAS ELENA?
The name Elena continued bothering me.
Initially, I wondered whether Patricia had concealed her legal identity throughout our marriage.
But the investigation revealed a less extraordinary explanation.
Elena was a name she’d used years earlier in certain personal and business circles. Her legal name remained Patricia, and there was no evidence that our marriage had been based on a false legal identity.
She’d apparently used Elena when dealing with Roberto to separate those contacts from her family life.
Legally, the distinction mattered.
Emotionally, it offered little comfort.
Patricia had created a private world of financial dealings and increasingly desperate decisions.
And when that world began collapsing, she’d tried to involve our daughter.
I remembered a conversation from several months earlier.
Patricia had asked whether my company still paid bonuses for completing major projects ahead of schedule.
I’d assumed she was thinking about our vacation budget.
Now I wondered whether she’d already been calculating how quickly she could replace the money she’d lost.
I couldn’t prove that was her intention.
But the memory showed me how little I’d understood about what was happening at home.
The financial investigation eventually suggested Roberto had encouraged Patricia to believe she could recover her losses by helping obtain certain commercial information.
That didn’t excuse her.
She’d made her own choices.
And one of them had put Daniela in the hospital.
THE LEGAL PROCESS
The investigation into Daniela’s injury continued for months.
Police reviewed the security footage, her medical records, and witness statements.
Patricia eventually faced charges related to the assault.
Daniela was frightened about participating in the proceedings.
One evening, she put down her fork during dinner.
“Dad, what if I freeze when they ask me questions?”
“Then you take your time.”
“What if Mom says I’m lying?”
“The recording doesn’t depend on what she says.”
Daniela stared at her plate.
“Sometimes I think I should’ve just given her the keys.”
