Princess Kate’s quiet message of ‘sorrow and grief’ honouring late mother-in-law Princess Diana

The Princess of Wales offered a quiet but meaningful tribute to Prince William’s late mother during the VE Day Service of Thanksgiving held on Thursday.

Princess Kate is known for the thoughtful symbolism behind her wardrobe choices, often using her outfits and accessories to express personal sentiments. Her recent appearance was no exception, as she honored Princess Diana in a subtle but heartfelt way.

At the service, Kate wore a polka-dot dress reminiscent of Princess Diana’s iconic style. But it was her jewelry that carried the most powerful symbolism, paying homage to the late Princess of Wales.

Tobias Kormind, managing director and co-founder of 77 Diamonds, commented on Kate’s look, describing the ensemble as “reminiscent of Princess Diana.”

“She chose to accessorise with pearls and opted for her Collingwood Pearl and Diamond drop earrings,” he noted. “These were gifted to the late Princess as a present by Collingwood, a jewellery firm favoured by the Spencers, and became a mainstay in her jewellery collection.”

He also added that the earrings have been a favorite of both princesses, often worn alongside the pearl and diamond Lover’s Knot tiara.

Tobias pointed out that the earrings were especially suitable for the VE Day occasion, stating, “The earrings were also fitting, keeping in mind the solemn nature of the occasion – pearls signify sorrow and grief, and this jewel was also worn by the Princess on Remembrance Sunday in 2021, tying together the two sombre occasions.”

Princess Kate’s previous VE Day tribute to her grandfather

This isn’t the first time the Princess of Wales has used her attire on VE Day to remember a loved one.

Earlier in the week, she appeared at the military parade alongside Prince William, Princess Anne, and Duchess Sophie. For that event, she wore a golden brooch pinned to her coat’s lapel, believed to be the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm brooch with Air Force wings.

This accessory served as a tribute to her late grandfather, Ronald Goldsmith, who served as a fighter pilot in the Second World War. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 72, following an eight-year struggle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a degenerative neurological disease.
