“Yes. I promise.”

The tunnel beneath the hotel smelled of stone, damp soil, and old oak barrels. Reid walked beside me while Cecily guided us toward the cathedral.

“When this is over, I won’t try to take Elsie from Lillian,” Reid said quietly.

“She is your daughter.”

“She is Lillian’s daughter first. Biology gives me a responsibility, not ownership.”

I looked at the man who had stepped between me and danger since childhood. Learning that he was my brother should have changed how I saw him, yet it merely explained what my heart had always known.

“You deserve a place in her life.”

“Only if Lillian decides I do.”

We entered the cathedral with four minutes remaining. Conrad stood near the altar, one hand resting on the metal case.

“The groom finally arrives,” he said.

Cecily stepped beside me.

“It’s over, Dad. I sent copies of your financial records to the authorities.”

His expression tightened. Those records connected his construction business to years of bribery, false contracts, and hidden payments.

He pressed a button, and the timer fell from three minutes to thirty seconds. Guests cried out and hurried away from the pews.

Cecily stared at the case, then surprised us all by laughing softly.

“He’s pretending,” she said.

She opened the lid before anyone could stop her. Beneath the wires and digital display were several theatrical smoke canisters. There was no explosive device.

Reid restrained Conrad as he reached beneath his jacket, but Conrad smiled even as guards closed around him.

“You still haven’t understood,” he said. “The real device was never in the cathedral.”

A blast rattled the stained-glass windows.

Smoke rose outside from the street where Lillian and Elsie had been waiting.

The Physician Behind the Plan

I ran from the cathedral and found the armored vehicle surrounded by flames. Reid and I broke a side window, but the back seat was empty except for one small pink shoe.

Then a pistol pressed against my back.

Dr. Malcolm Rusk stood behind us, looking nothing like the injured physician supposedly discovered in Lillian’s apartment earlier that morning.

“Conrad worked for you,” Reid said.

Rusk smiled. “Conrad believed he was in charge. That made him useful.”

Several vehicles surrounded the block. Men dressed like police officers emerged, though their weapons were directed toward us.

Rusk had spent decades controlling the Calder family through private medical records, concealed agreements, and carefully placed lies. He had saved one of Reid’s embryos because he believed the Calder bloodline—and the fortune attached to it—could be shaped through the next generation. Lillian had been selected because she was healthy, isolated from her family, and deeply connected to me.

“You treated her as though she were a container,” I said.

“I gave her a child.”

“Lillian gave Elsie a life.”

A cry came from a second-floor window across the street. Lillian stood there holding Elsie while one of Rusk’s men blocked the door behind them.

Rusk lifted his weapon.

Reid stepped in front of me just as it went off, taking the impact in his shoulder. I rushed Rusk, forcing the pistol from his hand before anger nearly carried me too far.

My mother caught my arm.

“Graham, stop. Don’t become what they are.”

Federal agents arrived moments later. Cecily had contacted them before we entered the passage and provided enough evidence for them to intervene. Rusk’s false officers surrendered, and agents freed Lillian and Elsie from the building.

When Elsie saw Reid sitting against the side of an ambulance, she ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

Reid stared at her, unable to speak.

She put her arms around him carefully, then turned toward me.

“You came back.”

“I promised.”

Elsie wrapped one arm around my neck while keeping the other around Reid. She was a child brought into the world through another person’s scheme, yet at that moment she joined two brothers who would spend the rest of their lives proving that love could be chosen.

Rusk laughed from where the agents held him.

“Ask Margaret who signed the authorization.”

I looked at my mother.

She did not deny that her signature was there.

The Cost of Silence

Margaret explained that years earlier, after Reid had been seriously hurt, she had approved the preservation of his genetic material. Rusk had hidden additional authorization pages among urgent medical documents, and she had signed without reading them carefully.

Her negligence had made his plan possible, but that was not her only failure.

When Lillian became pregnant, Rusk told Margaret the baby had a severe condition and could not safely remain near the Calder family. He convinced her that Lillian required private supervision and that Conrad would use the pregnancy to threaten both sons.

Instead of speaking honestly to me, Margaret frightened Lillian into leaving Boston.

“You took three years from us,” Lillian said.
