On My First Day Back at Work, I Checked the Baby Monitor and Saw My Husband Sitting Downstairs While Our Twins Cried Upstairs—Hours Later, I Discovered He Had Canceled Their Daycare Nine Days Before I Left Home, and Suddenly His Morning Text Made Sense

Part 3 of 3

I called Melissa once more to ask whether the cancellation had included any request to preserve one reservation or postpone the start date.

It hadn’t.

Both places had been released immediately, and the deposit was nonrefundable.

After thanking her, I forwarded the documents to my personal email and sent Rebecca a short message explaining what I had discovered.

She called almost immediately.

“Lauren, are you okay?”

I looked through the conference room window toward the parking lot.

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want me to come get you?”

“No. I’m going to finish my workday.”

Rebecca was quiet for a moment.

“I’ll stay with the twins as long as you need me today. You don’t have to figure everything out this afternoon.”

Her kindness nearly brought me to tears.

For months, Nathan had insisted that his objections were financial, and I had taken those concerns seriously. I had offered to reduce other expenses, reconsider our vacation plans, and adjust my work schedule if necessary.

But he had never been willing to discuss a solution that allowed me to continue working.

Every conversation eventually returned to the same conclusion: I should stay home.

Now I understood that he hadn’t been waiting for us to agree.

He had been waiting for me to run out of choices.

Part Five: The Conversation at the Kitchen Table

Nathan returned home shortly after six that evening.

Rebecca was in the family room with the twins, helping them stack soft blocks while I waited at the kitchen table.

The cancellation form lay in front of me.

When Nathan saw it, he stopped beside the doorway.

“Where did you get that?”

“The daycare sent it.”

He placed his keys on the counter.

“Lauren, I can explain.”

“Then please sit down.”

He pulled out a chair across from me.

I pointed to the date.

“You canceled their reservations nine days before I returned to work.”

“I was trying to save money.”

“Then why did you keep telling me everything was arranged?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because you never listened when I told you daycare was too expensive.”

“I listened. We discussed it. We looked at our finances together.”

“And you still insisted on going back.”

I took a moment before answering, because I wanted him to understand that this wasn’t simply another disagreement about household spending.

“I didn’t insist on anything unreasonable. We made a decision together, and you changed it without telling me.”

Nathan leaned back.

“I knew you’d just find another center if I told you.”

The words settled between us.

“So you canceled the reservations to make sure I couldn’t?”

He looked toward the family room.

“I made the decision I thought was best.”

“For whom?”

He didn’t answer.

I opened my phone and showed him the message he’d sent the previous morning.

“And what about this? You told me to come home while our children were crying.”

“I wanted you to understand how difficult it would be.”

“Difficult for whom, Nathan? You were home with them. You knew how to care for them.”

He shifted in his chair.

“I thought once you came back, you’d realize the whole arrangement was too complicated.”

I felt my eyes filling, although my voice remained steady.

“You let me leave the house believing the twins were safe and our childcare was arranged, even though you’d already decided to change everything.”

“I didn’t think you’d listen any other way.”

I looked toward the family room, where Owen had begun laughing at his aunt’s exaggerated attempt to balance a block on her head. Ellie was clapping beside him, delighted by the game.

They were so small, so trusting, and so completely unaware of the disagreement unfolding only a few feet away.

“Yesterday, when you heard them crying, why didn’t you go upstairs?” I asked.

Nathan lowered his eyes.

“Because I knew you’d check the monitor.”

I waited.

“And I figured you’d come home.”

Something inside me grew very quiet.

“You counted on me being worried about them.”

He didn’t disagree.

“I thought once you got home, you’d call Margaret and explain that you couldn’t return to work after all.”

I studied the man sitting across from me, remembering the husband who had held my hand through difficult appointments, assembled two cribs in a single afternoon, and spent countless evenings rocking our babies to sleep.

I had trusted that man with my future.

Now I was struggling to reconcile those memories with what he was admitting.

“Nathan,” I said softly, “are you telling me you expected me to resign?”

He finally met my eyes.

“Yes, Lauren. I thought you’d come home, realize this wasn’t going to work, and tell your supervisor you were leaving.”

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

From the next room came the gentle sounds of Rebecca talking to the twins, followed by Ellie’s bright little laugh.

I looked down at the paperwork between us, realizing that the most painful part wasn’t the money we had lost or the childcare arrangements we would have to rebuild.

It was knowing that the person I had trusted to stand beside me had deliberately created the very problem he wanted me to surrender to.

And as Nathan waited for my answer, I understood that whatever happened next, I could no longer pretend our marriage was facing an ordinary disagreement about daycare.

It was facing a question of trust.

And I wasn’t ready to give him the answer he expected.
