Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

My Widowed Father Finally Started Dating Again Twelve Years After My Mother’s Death, but Every Woman Promised a Second Date Before Disappearing Overnight—When My Best Friend Tried to Discover Why, Received Anonymous Photos of Their Dinner Before Dawn, and Vanished the Very Next Morning Too, I Realized Someone Had Been Watching Every Single Date

Part 2 of 3

Calls went directly to voicemail.

My stomach tightened.

I drove to her apartment.

Her car was gone.

Her curtains were closed.

No answer.

By evening I was beginning to wonder whether I should call the police.

Then my phone rang.

It was Dad.

“Did Rachel say something after dinner?”

“No.”

He hesitated.

“She told me she’d like to do this again.”

I closed my eyes.

Exactly like every woman before her.

“Dad…”

“She blocked me too.”

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

For the first time, I wasn’t thinking about dating anymore.

I was thinking about patterns.

And patterns meant someone—or something—was making sure every second date died before it ever had the chance to happen.

Rachel Finally Told Me Why She Had Disappeared, and the First Anonymous Message She Showed Me Made My Father Sit Down Without Saying a Word

Rachel finally answered my call almost thirty hours after disappearing.

Her voice barely sounded like hers.

“Can we meet somewhere public?”

“Rachel, are you okay?”

A long silence.

“Please. Just don’t bring your dad.”

I found her sitting alone in the corner of a coffee shop near the county library. She looked exhausted. Dark circles framed her eyes, and she kept glancing toward the front windows every few seconds.

The moment I sat down, she pushed a sealed envelope across the table.

“Don’t open it here.”

I stared at her.

“Rachel, what happened?”

She rubbed both hands together.

“I can’t see your father again.”

The words landed exactly like every explanation the other women had never given.

Except this time there actually was an explanation.

I slid the envelope open anyway.

Inside were printed screenshots.

The first picture froze my blood.

It showed Rachel and my father sitting at their restaurant table.

The photograph had clearly been taken through the front window from across the street.

Another showed them leaving together.

Another showed my father opening her car door.

The timestamps matched the exact hours of their date.

Someone had watched them the entire evening.

I looked up slowly.

“Who took these?”

Rachel swallowed.

“Keep going.”

The next screenshot was an anonymous text message.

Nice dinner.

Another.

You seem to enjoy widowers.

Then another.

You work at St. Mary’s Physical Therapy Clinic. Suite 304.

Another.

Your apartment lease ends in November.

My hands started shaking.

The final screenshots were worse.

A photograph of Rachel’s younger brother climbing into a recovery center.

A copy of an arrest record from years earlier.

A picture of her mother’s house.

Then one final message.

Walk away from Richard Bennett.

Do not contact him.

Do not contact his daughter.

If you don’t, your brother’s past becomes everyone else’s business.

I couldn’t breathe for several seconds.

Rachel quietly folded her arms.

“Those messages started arriving less than an hour after I got home.”

“Did you call the police?”

She nodded.

“They told me not to delete anything.”

“Who knows about your brother?”

She looked away.

“Almost nobody.”

Her younger brother, Dylan, had struggled with opioid addiction years earlier. He had completed treatment, rebuilt his life, and recently started working as an electrician.

Only close friends knew the details.

Dad certainly didn’t.

Neither had I.

Whoever sent those messages had done real research.

Or had been watching Rachel long before that dinner.

I looked back at the screenshots.

The anonymous sender never asked for money.

Never insulted my father.

Never flirted with Rachel.

Only one instruction appeared over and over.

Stay away from him.

That sentence appeared eight different times.

I suddenly understood why every woman had vanished.

They hadn’t rejected Dad.

Someone had frightened them into disappearing.

My Father Became a Suspect

Driving to Dad’s house, I barely touched the accelerator.

My brain kept returning to the same impossible question.

Who benefited from keeping him alone?

When Dad opened the front door, he immediately noticed my expression.

“What’s wrong?”

I handed him the envelope.

He read every page in complete silence.

Halfway through, he slowly lowered himself into a kitchen chair.

“These aren’t fake.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

For one terrible second I wondered whether he already knew who had sent them.

Whether there was something about his past he’d never told me.

Whether every failed relationship had happened for a reason.

I hated myself for even thinking it.

Finally I asked anyway.

“Dad… is there anyone who would do something like this?”

He stared at me as though I had spoken another language.

“Lola…”

His voice cracked.

“I swear to you, I have never seen these messages before.”

He reached for his phone.
