Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Three-Year-Old Pointed at My Stepmother’s Stomach and Shouted, “Daddy’s in There.” Everyone Laughed… Until My Husband Suddenly Went Pale, And I Suddenly Started Questioning Everything.

Part 2 of 3

Maybe too calm.

I looked from him to the tiny sun beside Rebecca’s tattoo and then back again, waiting for him to laugh, shrug, or tell me I was imagining things.

Instead, he simply waited.

“Can I ask you something?” I said.

“Of course.”

I pointed toward the tattoo.

“Have you ever seen that before?”

For the briefest moment, no one moved.

Then the color drained from Ethan’s face.

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t blink.

My father looked back and forth between us before breaking the silence.

“Ethan?”

Rebecca frowned, clearly as confused as the rest of us.

“Is something wrong?”

I wasn’t accusing anyone.

Not yet.

I genuinely believed there had to be a simple explanation, because a tiny drawing hidden beside an old tattoo couldn’t possibly mean what my imagination was beginning to suggest.

Then Ethan drew a slow breath, rubbed the back of his neck, and looked directly at Rebecca for what felt like the first time all afternoon.

When he finally spoke, his voice was so quiet that everyone at the table instinctively leaned closer to hear him.

“I… think I know who designed that tattoo.”

The Story Behind the Lighthouse

No one spoke for several long seconds.

Even the children seemed to sense that something had shifted.

The only sounds came from the pool filter humming in the background and the burgers sizzling on the grill Ethan had forgotten to turn down.

Rebecca looked at Ethan as though she were trying to place a face from another lifetime.

“Designed it?” she asked quietly. “What do you mean?”

Ethan swallowed before answering.

“I didn’t tattoo it,” he said. “I only drew it.”

Dad frowned.

“You drew Rebecca’s tattoo?”

Ethan nodded slowly without taking his eyes off the little sun.

“Almost twenty years ago.”

I stared at him.

“Twenty years ago?”

He looked at me, his expression calm but uneasy.

“Long before I ever met you.”

No one interrupted.

For the first time since Sophie’s birthday party had begun, every conversation in the backyard had stopped.

Even Ethan’s brother quietly lowered the lid of the cooler.

Rebecca folded her arms.

“I don’t understand.”

Ethan let out a slow breath.

“When I was in college, I volunteered with an art therapy program at Mercy Medical Center in Milwaukee. We worked with patients who’d gone through surgeries, burns, or serious accidents. Some of them wanted tattoos to help cover scars, but they didn’t know where to begin. My job wasn’t medical. I just listened to their stories and sketched ideas.”

Rebecca’s eyes widened ever so slightly.

She said nothing.

He continued.

“One afternoon, a young woman came in after abdominal surgery. She kept saying she couldn’t look at herself in the mirror anymore because all she could see was the scar.”

Rebecca slowly lowered her gaze.

Ethan wasn’t looking at anyone now.

It felt as though he was watching memories unfold instead of the people standing in front of him.

“She told me she didn’t want a flower or something decorative. She wanted something that meant surviving.”

He paused.

“So I asked her what had always made her feel safe.”

Rebecca answered before he could.

“Lighthouses.”

The word came out almost as a whisper.

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked pale.

“My grandfather was a lighthouse keeper on Lake Michigan,” she said quietly. “After he passed away, my parents used to drive me there whenever life got difficult.”

Ethan nodded once.

“You told me that.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

The silence that followed felt heavier than any argument.

“You drew it,” she murmured.

“Yes.”

She took an uncertain step closer.

“And… the words?”

“‘Still Standing,'” Ethan replied. “You said surviving wasn’t enough. You wanted to remember that you were still standing.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

For a moment I thought she might cry.

A Memory Neither of Them Had Kept

Dad looked completely lost.

“Wait a second,” he said. “Are you telling me the two of you knew each other before we ever met?”

Rebecca shook her head almost immediately.

“No.”

Ethan nodded in agreement.

“We met once.”

Rebecca smiled sadly.

“One afternoon.”

“That was it,” Ethan added. “She left with the sketch, and I never saw her again.”

Rebecca laughed softly through damp eyes.

“I didn’t even know your name.”

“I don’t think I ever knew yours either.”

She nodded.

“Back then, patients only used first names during the sessions.”

Dad looked from one of them to the other.

“Then how did neither of you recognize each other later?”

Rebecca gave a tired smile.

“Because twenty years changes people.”

She touched the side of her face.

“I had different hair, thirty pounds less, and I was recovering from surgery. I wasn’t exactly paying attention to the volunteers.”
