She Was Ready to Make Him the Heir She’d Waited Years For—Until the Housekeeper Walked In and Said, “Before You Sign Anything, You Need to Know Who’s Been Coming to the Gate Asking for a Real DNA Test.”

Part 2 of 3

In its place was a new portrait of Grant standing beside Cody.

Wren looked up at the wall.

“Mom, where is our picture?”

The housekeeper, Denise, looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Holloway asked me to put it downstairs.”

Wren’s fingers tightened around mine.

“Did Grandma stop wanting us?”

Before I could answer, Lenora entered the room.

“Don’t make this into something dramatic. I was simply updating the family wall.”

I looked at the woman who had spent years measuring children by whether they could continue a surname.

Then I calmly said to Denise, “Please bring me the photograph of my daughters.”

Lenora frowned.

“Why?”

“Because their faces belong in a home where they are valued.”

That evening, I called an attorney.

Choosing My Daughters

My attorney was a practical woman named Jocelyn Price who had no patience for excuses.

After reviewing our finances and Grant’s travel schedule, she asked me a simple question.

“What do you want your life to look like one year from now?”

I already knew.

My parents lived outside Portland, Oregon.

They had been asking us for years to move closer.

“I want my daughters with me, and I want to start over in Oregon.”

Jocelyn warned me that relocating children during a divorce could become complicated.

Grant proved her right.

When he realized I was serious, he suddenly became deeply concerned about keeping the girls in Ohio.

One afternoon, I heard him talking to Paige in our living room.

“You could stay here with me,” he told her. “You’d keep your school, your room, your friends. Your mom could take Lila and Wren.”

Paige stared at him.

“You want me to stay without my sisters?”

“You’re older. It would be easier for you.”

My sixteen-year-old daughter closed her laptop.

“Dad, if keeping me here means splitting us apart, then you’re not doing it for me.”

I stood unseen in the hallway, feeling both proud of her and heartbroken that she had been forced to become so wise.

Eventually, Grant agreed to primary custody remaining with me. His demanding travel schedule made his chances of becoming the girls’ primary caregiver weak, and he did not want a long financial dispute exposing every transfer he had made.

We agreed on extended summer visits, holidays, and weekly video calls.

For the first time in months, I could see a path forward.

What none of us knew was that Grant’s other problem was about to become much bigger.

The Man at the Gate

While I was preparing to move, Brynn became increasingly close to Lenora.

She and Cody eventually moved into Lenora’s house after Brynn claimed her lease was ending.

Lenora loved having the boy nearby.

She introduced him to relatives as “the future of the Holloway family.”

Denise, Lenora’s housekeeper, watched everything quietly.

Then a stranger began appearing near the front gate.

His name was Travis Keene.

The first time he came, he asked to speak with Brynn.

The moment Brynn saw him, her expression changed.

“You need to leave.”

“I’m not here for you,” Travis answered. “I want the truth about Cody.”

Brynn quickly closed the door.

Later, she told Denise that Travis was simply an old boyfriend causing problems.

But he returned two days later.

This time, Brynn was away.

Travis handed Denise his phone number.

“Brynn and I were still together around the time Cody was conceived. She told me he wasn’t mine, and I walked away. I regret that. I’m not asking anyone for money. I only want a proper DNA test.”

Denise kept the number.

Then she began paying closer attention.

She noticed how often Brynn talked to Lenora about Cody’s financial security.

She noticed conversations about inheritance.

And finally, she learned Lenora was preparing to make a decision that could permanently change her estate.

Thanksgiving Changed Everything

On Thanksgiving, Lenora gathered relatives in her formal living room after dinner.

Cody played with toy trucks on the carpet while Brynn sat nearby.

Grant looked uncomfortable.

Lenora held a thick folder.

“I’ve decided to place half of this property, along with a significant portion of my investments, into a trust for Cody.”

Brynn immediately shook her head.

“Lenora, that’s too generous.”

But Denise saw something different behind Brynn’s polite expression.

Lenora continued.

“He is my grandson. He deserves security.”

Grant leaned forward.

“Mom, you’re moving very fast.”

Lenora ignored him.

That was when Denise stepped into the room.

“Mrs. Holloway, please don’t sign anything tomorrow.”

Everyone turned.

Lenora stared at her.

“Excuse me?”

Brynn stood quickly.

“Denise, this is a family conversation.”

Denise remained where she was.

“A man named Travis has come here twice.”

Brynn’s face lost its color.

Grant immediately noticed.

“Who is Travis?”

Denise answered before Brynn could.

“He says he was involved with Brynn when Cody was conceived, and he wants a legitimate DNA test.”

Brynn shook her head.

“He’s lying.”

Denise placed his number on the coffee table.

“Then another test should settle it.”

For the first time, Grant looked genuinely frightened.

The Test No One Could Control

The following morning, Grant called Travis.

Travis did not ask for compensation or threaten anyone.

He wanted only one thing.

A professionally supervised DNA test.

Brynn resisted.
