My Husband Took Another Woman to the Gala That Could Save His Company—Three Hours Later, I Entered Beside the Executives He Had Chased for Years… but a Hidden File After Midnight Revealed His Betrayal Was Only the Beginning

Part 2 of 3

The logo of Bennett Urban Partners appeared.

A restless murmur traveled through the audience.

Evan stood. “Lydia, surely we should discuss this privately.”

She looked down from the stage.

“This concerns the financial representations made by your company, Mr. Bennett. It is therefore a business matter.”

The use of his surname unsettled him more than anger would have.

“There must be some misunderstanding.”

“Your proposal included altered revenue projections and concealed the losses associated with your Harbor Point development.”

Documents appeared on the screen: the original figures, the revised presentation, and internal messages instructing the finance department to move certain liabilities away from the primary report.

Evan stared at pages he recognized.

“You went through confidential company files.”

“Your office submitted those files to mine.”

A few guests lowered their heads to conceal their smiles.

Only then did Evan remember the questions Lydia had asked over the years—about loan ratios, construction delays, and rising financing costs. He had dismissed every one of them, sometimes joking that household budgets hardly qualified her to discuss commercial property.

“You misled me about who you were,” he said.

“I told you my name and said I worked in private investment.”

“You told me your family was ordinary.”

“They were ordinary people,” Lydia replied. “They simply accumulated an unusual amount of property.”

Soft laughter moved through the ballroom.

Evan’s face reddened. “Our marriage was based on dishonesty.”

“Our marriage was based on a choice. I chose not to judge you by what you owned. You judged me by what you assumed I did not own.”

Naomi placed her glass on a passing tray and stepped away from him.

“This is a private issue,” she said quickly. “I had no idea Lydia was connected to Caldwell Meridian.”

“Please remain where you are, Ms. Prescott,” Lydia said. “The next matter concerns you.”

A photograph appeared of Naomi meeting one of Caldwell Meridian’s regional directors at a private restaurant three months earlier.

Lydia explained that Naomi had offered confidential contracts, passwords, and investor lists in exchange for help obtaining a position inside Caldwell Meridian. Naomi denied the accusation until an audio recording filled the ballroom.

Her own voice described the files Evan left unprotected and promised access to them once the partnership was approved.

When the recording ended, Evan turned toward her.

“You told me you were helping secure the agreement.”

“I was protecting my future,” Naomi answered faintly.

“By trading away my company?”

“Your company was already coming apart.”

Lydia watched them without triumph. To Evan, that calmness was worse than satisfaction. She had not arrived seeking an emotional victory. She had arrived to complete a decision.

What Had Never Belonged to Him

Lydia announced that Caldwell Meridian had withdrawn its offer and forwarded the questionable financial disclosures for formal review. Two members of Evan’s board quietly moved away from him.

Desperation replaced his practiced confidence.

“Lydia, we can repair this,” he said. “Eight years should mean more than one bad evening.”

“This evening did not create the problem. It revealed it.”

“We both made mistakes. You concealed your position, and I lost sight of what mattered.”

“You brought another woman into our home. You removed money from our shared account, and you gave her my mother’s bracelet.”

Naomi instinctively covered the narrow silver bracelet on her wrist.

It held only one pale blue stone, and Evan had assumed it was inexpensive. He had never understood that Lydia’s mother had worn it throughout Lydia’s childhood and placed it in her hand during their final days together.

Lydia looked at Naomi.

“Please take it off.”

“Evan gave it to me.”

“It was never his to give.”

Naomi’s hands shook too badly to manage the clasp, so a security officer opened it and carried the bracelet to Lydia’s chief of staff.

“You may keep the other gifts,” Lydia said.

Naomi’s embarrassment turned sharp. “You stood in that house pretending to be helpless while everyone laughed at you.”

“I never pretended to be helpless.”

“You drove an old car and let Evan pay for everything.”

“I paid for the house.”

Evan turned toward Lydia.

“I also own the building where your company keeps its offices and the property beneath Harbor Point.”

“Harbor Point belongs to Sterling Ridge Holdings.”

“Sterling Ridge belongs to me.”

The ballroom filled with whispers.

The development supported nearly every major loan Evan had taken. His reputation, future contracts, and promised expansion all depended on the land beneath it.

“You cannot simply take it away,” he said.

“I don’t need to take what was never yours. Your company leased the site and violated multiple conditions of that agreement.”
