Part 2 of 3

By then, Everett’s tone had changed.

“What did you do?”

“My mother is extremely upset.”

“There was no reason to involve an attorney.”

I sent only one response.

“Please direct legal communication to Rebecca Alden. Maisie is safe and warm.”

People did become more polite when documents replaced emotion, just as Rebecca had predicted.

The Name Behind March

At the temporary hearing three days later, the court preserved both parties’ interest in the house, restricted changes to shared property, ordered financial disclosure, and established carefully arranged visits between Everett and Maisie.

When the judge asked whether Everett had understood the housing agreement when he signed it, he hesitated.

“There were many papers at closing.”

The judge looked steadily at him.

“That was not my question, Mr. Prescott.”

Everett’s face reddened.

“Yes. I understood it at the time.”

There was no shouting and no public spectacle. Still, when I left the courtroom, I felt as though I had recovered the ground beneath my feet.

Everett approached me in the hallway.

“How is Maisie?”

“Confused, but safe.”

He looked toward Dad, who was holding her near the elevators. Maisie recognized Everett but pressed herself shyly against her grandfather.

Something painful crossed Everett’s face.

“Brooke, there are things you don’t understand.”

“Then explain them.”

His eyes moved toward Judith, who stood several yards away in an immaculate cream coat.

“Not here.”

I had spent too many years accepting half-answers.

“If there was something I needed to understand, you had years to tell me.”

Everett lowered his voice.

“I was trying to fix it before anyone found out.”

Before I could ask what he meant, Judith reached us and took his arm.

“Everett, we’re leaving.”

He obeyed immediately.

That afternoon, Dad showed me an anonymous photograph he had received three weeks earlier. Everett was standing outside a brick office building with an older man in narrow glasses. On the back, someone had written:

ASK HIM ABOUT APRIL.

I recognized the older man from Maisie’s first birthday party. He had stood near our back fence speaking quietly with Judith, though she had never introduced him.

That night, an unknown caller left a voicemail.

“Brooke, my name is Paige Monroe. You’ve been told only part of the truth. The man in the photograph is connected to Everett’s family, and April was never about an affair. It was about Maisie.”

Rebecca traced the brick building to a private mediation practice operated by Warren Decker, a retired probate attorney who had once handled confidential guardianship cases. His name appeared in a sealed proceeding involving Judith nearly thirty years earlier.

More troubling, someone had recently requested a certified copy of Maisie’s birth certificate using Everett’s information but had directed it to a rented mailbox. A second attempt had been made through an online account in my name.

I remembered that Everett had borrowed Maisie’s birth certificate in April, claiming he needed it for an insurance matter. The original should have been in the file box inside our bedroom closet.

When Rebecca, Dad, and I returned to the house under the temporary order, the box was still there—but Maisie’s documents, my identification papers, our passports, and our marriage certificate were missing.

Everett looked genuinely unsettled.

“They should be here.”

“You used Maisie’s birth certificate in April,” I said. “Tell me why.”

“It was related to insurance.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“This would be an excellent time to give a precise answer.”

Everett glanced toward the staircase before speaking.

“I can’t discuss it safely here. My mother has keys.”

A sound came from downstairs.

When we reached the landing, the front door stood open, allowing winter air into the hallway. Across the street, a dark sedan moved away from the curb and disappeared around the corner.

Dad brought Maisie inside from his truck while Rebecca reported the possible unauthorized entry and missing documents. Everett sat near the fireplace, looking less like the confident man who had rejected us and more like someone collapsing under the weight of secrets he had helped preserve.

Maisie reached toward him.

“Daddy?”

He looked at me for permission before taking her. When I nodded, he held her against his chest with careful, trembling arms.

“I’m sorry, Maisie.”

It was his first apology that sounded honest.
