Behind Closed Doors Moral Stories

My Husband Sent Hot Tea at Me When I Refused to Hand Over $26,000 for His Mother’s Luxury European Vacation, Then Pointed at the Front Door and Said, “Transfer the Money or Get Out”—I Packed One Suitcase and Walked Away Without Arguing, but Before I Left, I Took a Locked Blue Folder From My Office That He Had Signed Years Ago Without Ever Reading

Part 2 of 3

“This is still current.”

“So he doesn’t own the house?”

“Not through the title, no.”

I looked down at Andrew’s signature.

For years, he had called it our house.

Sometimes, around his friends, he called it the house I bought after the business took off.

I had never corrected him.

Rebecca moved the document aside.

“Now let’s deal with the money.”

With the bank’s fraud department involved, we began reviewing the transfers from the emergency account.

By that afternoon, we had an answer.

The $37,000 had not gone toward Andrew’s business.

It had paid for business-class airfare.

Hotels.

Private tours.

Deposits.

Transportation.

Diane’s European vacation.

I called the bank again from Rebecca’s conference room.

The representative explained that several of the larger transactions had required authorization associated with both account holders.

My stomach tightened.

“I didn’t authorize them.”

There was silence on the other end.

Then the representative asked several security questions.

The bank had records of the electronic authorization.

Dates.

Times.

Device information.

Login activity.

The approvals connected to my authorization had come from a computer associated with Andrew.

Rebecca was writing something on a legal pad.

I stopped her.

“He used my electronic signature.”

“That’s what we need the bank to determine formally,” she said. “Don’t contact him about it yet.”

My phone buzzed.

Andrew.

Are you coming home or not?

I placed the phone facedown.

“No,” I said.

Rebecca looked up.

“No what?”

I slid the phone toward her.

“I’m not going home to apologize.”

That afternoon, we began the divorce filing.

We also requested temporary protections over the disputed accounts while the bank investigated the transactions.

The medical documentation from the night before mattered too.

By the time Andrew realized I wasn’t bluffing, the situation had moved beyond a family argument.

The next morning, temporary restrictions were placed on the joint funds.

And because of what had happened in the kitchen, I received a temporary protective order that prevented Andrew from entering the house.

The same house he had ordered me to leave.

I went home with Rebecca’s copy of the paperwork inside the blue folder.

Diane’s three suitcases were gone.

For the first time in years, the kitchen was completely quiet.

The broken mug was still in the trash.

I left it there.

Andrew Came Back With His Mother’s Suitcases

Andrew returned the following afternoon.

I saw his SUV pull into the driveway from my office window.

Diane was beside him.

The rear hatch opened.

There were the three suitcases.

For a second, I couldn’t understand why they had brought them.

Then Diane climbed out smiling.

They thought it was over.

They thought I had gone home, calmed down, and transferred the money.

Andrew walked toward the front door and tried his key.

Nothing.

He tried again.

Then he knocked.

“Lauren?”

I opened the door but didn’t step aside.

His expression changed when he saw Rebecca standing several feet behind me.

“What’s she doing here?”

“You can’t come inside.”

Andrew laughed.

“Very funny.”

I handed him the order.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

“What the hell is this?”

“A temporary protective order.”

Diane came up the walkway.

“Andrew, what’s happening?”

He looked past me into the house.

“Lauren, move.”

“No.”

“This is my house.”

That was when I opened the blue folder.

I removed one document.

Nothing dramatic.

Just paper.

I held it out.

“Read this.”

Andrew barely looked at it.

“I’ve seen this.”

“Then read the name.”

His eyes moved across the page.

He stopped.

Diane leaned closer.

“What does it say?”

Andrew didn’t answer.

I waited.

Finally, he looked at me.

“This was for creditor protection.”

“It was part of protecting the property when your business was failing.”

“Exactly.”

“And you signed it.”

His jaw tightened.

“Because you told me to.”

“I told you to read it.”

Diane pulled at his sleeve.

“Andrew, whose house is it?”

He ignored her.

I answered.

“The property is owned through my company. It was purchased with my separate inheritance.”

Diane stared at me.

Then at the house.

“But Andrew pays for this house.”

I didn’t answer.

Andrew had paid household expenses when his business allowed it.

But the money that secured the property hadn’t come from him.

A car stopped near the curb.

Andrew looked over.

“Who’s that?”

The process server approached.

Rebecca stepped away from the doorway.

Andrew’s face changed when he heard his name.

He accepted the papers reluctantly.

He looked at the first page.

Then at me.

“Divorce?”

“Yes.”

“Over tea?”

I said nothing.

He shook the papers.

“You’re ending seven years of marriage because I lost my temper once?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

I looked at Diane’s suitcases.

“Thirty-seven thousand dollars.”

He stopped moving.

Diane looked between us.

“What thirty-seven thousand?”

Andrew spoke quickly.

“It’s being handled.”

I looked directly at him.

“The bank is investigating it.”

His face went still.

“Investigating what?”

“The authorization used to take money from our emergency account.”

Diane frowned.

“That was for my trip.”

Andrew turned toward her.

“Mom.”
