Then I saw tears gathering in his eyes.
“What happened?” I asked weakly.
He looked directly at me.
“Who is the child’s father?”
My heart skipped a beat.
“Damian Prescott.”
The doctor tightened his grip on the blanket.
Before he could say another word, the door opened.
Damian walked into the room.
An Unexpected Visitor
Damian smiled when he saw me.
It was the same smile he always wore during business meetings.
Cold.
Controlled.
Distant.
Constance followed closely behind him.
Neither of them carried flowers.
Neither of them asked whether I was feeling well.
Constance looked directly at the baby.
“So this is the child?”
I held my son a little closer.
“This is my son.”
Damian laughed softly.
“We’ll see what the court decides.”
The doctor immediately stepped between them and the bassinet.
His name was Dr. Samuel Prescott.
The moment Constance saw his face, her expression changed.
“Samuel?” she whispered.
The room became perfectly still.
Damian stared at the doctor.
“What are you doing here?”
Dr. Prescott answered calmly.
“My job.”
Constance quickly regained her composure.
“This is a private family matter.”
“I’m responsible for the care of my patient,” Samuel replied. “I’m staying right here.”
Damian turned toward me.
“You’re exhausted, Amelia. Sign temporary custody papers, and I’ll take care of the expenses.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Constance stepped closer.
“Think carefully. What can you possibly offer this child?”
I looked down at my son.
“Everything he truly needs.”
Damian’s eyes narrowed.
“You still believe you can fight us?”
I smiled.
“You made one mistake.”
“And what was that?”
“You underestimated me.”
Secrets Hidden in Plain Sight
I reached into my bag and removed a thick folder.
Damian immediately recognized the documents.
The color drained from his face.
I lifted several pages into the air.
“These records show unauthorized transfers.”
Constance took a step backward.
I pulled out another page.
“These messages discuss forcing me into signing away my rights as a mother.”
Damian moved toward me.
“Give those back.”
Dr. Prescott immediately stepped forward.
“That would be a terrible idea.”
Damian glared at him.
“You have no idea what is happening here.”
The doctor looked toward my sleeping son.
“I believe I know more than you realize.”
That evening, after everyone had left, Dr. Prescott returned to my room.
He closed the door behind him.
His hands were shaking.
