Part 2 of 3

“That doesn’t mean I read it.”

Mason glanced at me.

I could tell by his face that the answer had landed exactly as badly as it sounded.

The Housekeeper Remembered the Letters

Dinner never happened.

The food remained under silver covers while people drifted between the terrace and the great room, pretending not to listen.

Margaret called for Helen Parker, a woman who had worked for the Whitmore family for more than thirty years.

Helen was carrying folded napkins when she entered.

Margaret showed her the certified-mail copy.

“Do you remember letters from Claire?”

Helen looked at me.

Then at Alexander.

Her shoulders lowered.

“Yes.”

Margaret went completely still.

“Where did they go?”

Helen put the napkins down.

“General Whitmore handled them.”

Alexander’s father had died three years earlier.

His portrait still hung above the fireplace in full dress uniform.

Margaret looked toward it.

“Handled them how?”

Helen hesitated.

“He told the staff that anything from Mrs. Bennett was to go directly to his office.”

“Why?”

“He said it was a family matter.”

Alexander finally spoke.

“There. That’s what happened.”

Everyone looked at him.

He seemed relieved.

“My father controlled everything back then. You all know what he was like.”

I closed the folder.

“Your father didn’t work in your mailroom.”

Alexander looked at me.

“What?”

I tapped the receipt bearing his signature.

“This went to you.”

His face changed again.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

So did Vanessa.

“Alexander,” she said quietly, “did you know?”

“I knew Claire claimed—”

“No.”

Vanessa stepped away from him.

“Did you know there were babies?”

Alexander rubbed his forehead.

“This was eight years ago.”

Mason spoke from beside me.

“That wasn’t the question.”

For the first time all evening, Alexander looked directly at his son.

And he couldn’t answer him.

Mason Put a Photograph on the Table

I thought the documents were everything we had.

I was wrong.

Mason had been unusually quiet during the drive to the hospital that morning. I assumed he was nervous.

Instead, he had been carrying something.

He reached inside his coat.

“I found this in the envelope Grandma Helen gave Mom.”

I frowned.

“What envelope?”

Helen covered her mouth.

Mason unfolded an old photograph.

I knew the room immediately.

The neonatal intensive care unit.

Four incubators stood in a row.

I was not in the picture.

But Alexander was.

He stood behind the incubators wearing his Army uniform.

I stared at the photograph.

For a few seconds, I forgot there were other people in the room.

“Where did you get that?”

Helen answered.

“General Whitmore kept it.”

I turned toward her.

“I have never seen this.”

“I found it after he died. I didn’t know what to do with it.”

Mason put the photograph on the table.

Alexander didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

He simply looked down.

Vanessa whispered, “You were there.”

Alexander sat.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Margaret said, “Tell us what happened.”

He kept looking at the photograph.

“Dad took me.”

My hands went cold.

Alexander continued.

“He said I needed to see what Claire had done.”

I almost laughed at the wording.

Done.

As though four premature infants were something I had done to him.

“And?” Margaret asked.

“I saw them.”

Noah had been standing behind Caleb.

Now he stepped forward.

“You saw us when we were babies?”

Alexander nodded once.

“Yes.”

“All four?”

Another nod.

Noah looked at me.

Then back at him.

“And you left?”

Alexander’s eyes closed briefly.

“My father said if I acknowledged paternity, everything would become complicated. My career. Financial support. Assignments. He said there would be publicity because of our family.”

Santiago—Ethan had always been the quietest of my boys, but that night he was the one whose voice hardened.

“You were an adult.”

Alexander looked at him.

“I know.”

“Mom was alone.”

“I know.”

“We were babies.”

Alexander didn’t answer.

I finally spoke.

“I was twenty-seven.”

He looked at me.

“Claire—”

“I spent nights sitting between four incubators because doctors couldn’t promise me all four children would come home.”

I pointed at the photograph.

“Your biggest fear was losing a promotion.”

He lowered his eyes.

That was all I needed to say.

Vanessa Took Off Her Ring

Vanessa had barely spoken.

Then she walked to the table.

She removed her engagement ring.

It was a large diamond set in platinum.

She placed it directly beside the DNA reports.

Alexander stared at it.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

“Please don’t make a decision because of something that happened before we met.”

She looked at the four boys.

“You having children before we met isn’t the problem.”

“Then what is?”

“You knew.”

He stood.

“I was under enormous pressure.”

“You knew.”

“I was twenty-nine.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Twenty-nine isn’t a child.”

He reached for her hand.

She moved it away.

“What scares me is not that you have four sons.”

Her voice remained low.

“It’s that you saw them in incubators, walked away, and then spent eight years telling people Claire invented them.”

Alexander glanced around the room.

Nobody helped him.

Margaret walked toward my sons.
