I Was Breastfeeding My 5-Month-Old Baby on a Plane When the Woman Beside Me Suddenly Snapped, “You Should Be Ashamed of Yourself! Go Lock Yourself in the Bathroom!”—But Moments Later, My Older Daughter Noticed Something She Had Dropped and Taught Her a Lesson She Never Saw Coming

Part 2 of 3

I turned.

“Sweetheart, sit down.”

“You’ll have more room there. I can sit here.”

“Hadley—”

She leaned closer and whispered, “Please.”

Theo was becoming restless again.

Passengers nearby were already glancing toward us.

Against my better judgment, I agreed.

I carefully moved into Hadley’s aisle seat one row behind while she slid beside Marianne.

Before I sat down, Hadley whispered something else.

“She dropped a picture.”

I frowned.

“What picture?”

“I don’t know yet.”

That was when I saw the expression on her face.

Gavin used to call it Hadley’s detective face.

Her eyebrows pulled together slightly whenever she believed adults were being unfair, inconsistent, or suspicious.

I wanted to tell her not to interfere.

But Theo needed me, and Hadley had already turned forward.

The Photograph on the Floor

A few minutes later, Hadley bent down.

Near Marianne’s shoe was a small printed photograph that had apparently slipped from the side pocket of her handbag.

Hadley picked it up.

Marianne noticed immediately.

“Give me that.”

Her voice was sharp enough that several passengers looked over.

Hadley held it carefully by the edge.

“You dropped it. I was giving it back.”

Marianne reached for the photograph.

Then Hadley looked at it.

A young woman was sitting on a sofa holding a baby.

Hadley glanced at Marianne.

Then she unlocked her tablet.

On the screen was a photograph taken three weeks earlier at home: me holding Theo while Hadley leaned against my shoulder.

She placed the two images side by side.

Something in Marianne’s face changed.

“Why are you doing that?” she asked.

Hadley looked at her.

“Is this your daughter?”

Marianne hesitated.

“Yes.”

“And that baby is your grandson?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Hadley nodded.

Then she asked the question that changed the entire flight.

“Would you want a stranger to talk to your daughter the way you’ve been talking to my mom?”

Marianne stared at her.

No one nearby spoke.

Hadley continued, her voice quieter now.

“Would you want somebody telling your daughter she shouldn’t travel with her baby, or that feeding him makes her a bad mother?”

Marianne looked down at the photograph.

Her fingers tightened around its edge.

Finally, she whispered, “No.”

Hadley waited.

Marianne looked at her again.

“No, I wouldn’t.”

Hadley locked her tablet.

“Then maybe my mom deserves the same kindness.”

What Marianne Had Never Told Us

I returned to my seat once Theo finished eating.

Hadley moved behind us again.

For several minutes, Marianne said nothing.

Then she turned the photograph over in her hands.

“Her name is Kelsey.”

I looked at her.

“Your daughter?”

She nodded.

“She moved to Boston three years ago.”

That caught my attention.

“We’re going to Boston too.”

Marianne gave a small, uncomfortable smile.

“So am I.”

She stared at the picture again.

“I’m meeting my grandson for the first time.”

I could not hide my surprise.

The baby in the photograph looked several months old.

“You haven’t met him yet?”

“Kelsey invited me many times.”

“Why didn’t you go?”

Marianne took a long breath.

“Because I disapproved of almost every decision she made.”

She listed them slowly.

Kelsey had chosen a neighborhood Marianne disliked.

She had changed careers.

Her partner worked irregular hours.

She did not organize her home the way Marianne thought she should.

She had also stopped visiting as often after becoming a mother.

Then Marianne admitted something that made the whole situation painfully clear.

“I was actually planning what I would say to her when I arrived.”

“What were you planning to say?”

She looked ashamed.

“Mostly what she was doing wrong.”

I looked at Theo sleeping against me.

Then I said, “You judged me for a few minutes before you knew anything about my life.”

Marianne nodded.

“I did.”

“Maybe you’ve been doing the same thing to your daughter from a distance.”

She closed her eyes briefly.

“I think I have.”

The Truth About My Family

I had not planned to tell Marianne anything personal.

But something about the way she was holding that photograph changed my mind.

“My husband’s name was Gavin.”

She looked at me.

“Was?”

I nodded.

“We lost him five weeks ago.”

Marianne’s face softened instantly.

I continued before she could respond.
