Part 3 of 3

Julian stepped toward the windows, where Seattle had nearly disappeared behind the rain.

“He never told me.”

“He said the clause would keep you obedient.”

Julian gave a brief, empty laugh. “He’s been gone for twelve years, and we’re still following his rules.”

For once, Evelyn did not argue.

What Could Not Be Bought Back

Julian turned away from the skyline and looked at Wren, not as an heir or a voting interest, but as a baby whose sock had slipped from one foot.

“Meredith, I don’t care what she owns. I care that someone knew about her before I did and that someone followed you.”

“Then understand this clearly,” Meredith said. “Wren will not become a weapon in a fight over your family’s company.”

“She won’t.”

“You cannot promise that until you know what’s happening.”

Julian accepted the correction. “Then I’ll prove it through what I do next.”

Meredith asked for a quiet, secure room where she could feed Wren. Julian offered the private sitting room beside his office and walked with them at a respectful distance.

Inside, Meredith noticed a photograph on his credenza. It was not the formal wedding portrait once published in newspapers, but an unguarded picture from the reception, taken after she had removed her shoes and Julian had loosened his tie. They were laughing at something beyond the frame.

“I kept it,” he said.

While Meredith settled Wren beneath a blanket, Julian turned toward the window to give her privacy.

“Tell me what I missed,” he said.

She almost refused, but Wren would eventually learn what love looked like by watching the adults around her. Meredith did not want her daughter to mistake silence for strength.

So she told Julian about the positive test, the unanswered calls, the first ultrasound and the appointments she attended alone. She described sleeping with her phone beside her and waking each morning to the same empty screen. Then she told him about Wren’s arrival and how the baby quieted the instant she was placed against her mother’s chest.

“She seemed to know exactly where she belonged,” Meredith said.

Julian’s eyes filled with regret.

“I should have been there.”

“Yes. You should have.”

He did not ask her to soften the truth.

“I won’t try to buy my way back with gifts or promises,” he said. “I want to uncover what Blake did, what my mother permitted, what my father arranged—and what I did to create enough distance for all of it to work.”

Meredith studied him.

“And what did you do?”

“I treated success as if it excused absence. At work, people praised me every time I stayed late. At home, you asked me to be present, and I treated your request like another demand instead of recognizing it as love.”

It was not reconciliation, and Meredith was not ready to cancel the separation. Yet for the first time in years, they were speaking without lawyers, assistants or pride standing between them.

Evelyn appeared quietly at the doorway.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m not asking either of you to forgive me today. But I am sorry I made Meredith feel unwelcome, and I’m sorry I spoke about Wren as though she were a legal problem.”

“She will never be one,” Meredith answered.

“No,” Evelyn agreed. “She will not.”

The Voice from the Estate

Evelyn produced another document from her handbag. Harrison’s private attorney had given it to her years earlier with instructions that sealed records be released if Julian ever had a child. The identity of the trustee, however, had been removed.

A knock sounded from Julian’s outer office.

Tobias Reed, his head of corporate security, entered carrying a tablet. Camera footage showed the courier who had delivered Blake’s envelope leaving the building in a sedan registered to a company connected with the old family trust.

The courier was not Blake.

He was an older man whose face bore an extraordinary resemblance to Harrison Cross.

Julian stared at the image. “My father had no brother.”

“Facial analysis found a close match,” Tobias said, “but we cannot confirm who this man is.”

Then Tobias played an audio message sent to Julian’s private number.

An older man’s controlled voice filled the office.

“Julian, if you’re hearing this, Meredith has finally brought the child into the open. Do not trust the board or the old legal firm. Wren changes everything, but not for the reason you have been told.”

Static interrupted the recording before the voice returned.

“Wren is not the first Cross child hidden from the family.”

The message ended.

Evelyn whispered a name.

“Audrey.”

Julian turned toward her. “Who is Audrey?”

Before she could answer, his desk phone rang. Tobias checked the display and stiffened.

“The call is coming from inside the Cross estate.”

Julian placed it on speaker.

A young, uncertain voice came through the line.

“Julian? Please don’t hang up. My name is Audrey Cross.”

Meredith instinctively held Wren closer.

The caller drew a nervous breath before adding the sentence that left everyone in the office silent.

“I believe Wren is my sister.”
