I Came Home Early and Found My 80-Year-Old Mother Eating on the Kitchen Floor—Hours Later, One Hidden Recording Revealed Why My Fiancée Had Been Desperate to Get Her Out of the House

Part 2 of 3

Corinne stared at him.

“What?”

“There will be no wedding.”

Her face changed from disbelief to anger.

“You are throwing away three years because she sat on the floor for ten minutes?”

“I am ending this because of what you do when you believe no one important is watching.”

Corinne’s eyes filled with tears, but Everett no longer knew whether they were real.

“You will regret this,” she said. “You are choosing guilt over love.”

“No. I am choosing to stop ignoring what is happening inside my own home.”

The Envelope in the Bedroom

Everett told Corinne to pack an overnight bag and stay with her mother.

Before she could respond, Mabel reached for his arm.

“There is something you need to see before she leaves.”

She walked slowly toward her bedroom and returned carrying a brown envelope that had been folded several times.

Inside was a brochure for an assisted living residence outside Sun Prairie.

There was also a payment receipt for fifteen thousand dollars and an admission form bearing Everett’s name.

The scheduled arrival date was the following Monday.

Everett studied the signature at the bottom of the page.

It looked like his handwriting.

But he had never seen the document before.

“What is this?”

Mabel’s hands began to tremble.

“Corinne said you had chosen the residence. She told me you were too ashamed to explain it yourself.”

Everett looked at Corinne.

She had stopped crying.

“You signed my name?”

“I was researching options,” Corinne answered quickly. “Your mother misunderstood what the papers were for.”

“Then why was money transferred?”

“It was a refundable deposit.”

Mabel opened the envelope again.

“That is not everything.”

She removed a small notebook with a flowered cover.

Every page contained dates, short descriptions, and sentences Corinne had allegedly said.

Mabel explained that she had started writing things down because Corinne repeatedly claimed she was confused.

Over the previous two months, Corinne had served her smaller meals, hidden the television remote, unplugged the house phone, and told her to stay in her bedroom whenever guests visited.

When Mabel questioned the assisted living documents, Corinne told her that Everett had already made the decision.

“Why didn’t you call me?” Everett asked.

Mabel’s voice cracked.

“She said you would think I was trying to ruin your wedding.”

The Evidence Corinne Forgot

Everett called his younger sister, Jocelyn.

She arrived twenty minutes later and listened without interrupting.

When she saw the brochure, her expression hardened.

“Corinne called this residence three weeks ago,” Jocelyn said. “She asked whether they accepted residents when family members could not attend the intake meeting.”

Corinne shook her head.

“I was gathering information. Families do that.”

Jocelyn began checking the folders in the home office.

Several copies of Mabel’s bank statements, prescription records, identification documents, and property papers were missing.

Corinne had apparently been assembling a private file that could make Mabel appear unable to manage her own decisions.

When Everett confronted her, Corinne reached for her phone.

Within minutes, she posted a message in the family group claiming that Everett had canceled the wedding because Mabel was experiencing memory problems.

She suggested that his mother urgently needed professional care.

Relatives began calling almost immediately.

Some accused Everett of allowing his mother to control his life. Others blamed Mabel for destroying his happiness.

Then Corinne’s mother arrived with her two adult sons.

“Do you understand how much money has been spent on this wedding?” she demanded.

“That is your concern?” Jocelyn asked. “You walked into this house, saw an eighty-year-old woman shaking, and your first question is about deposits?”

Corinne’s mother turned toward Mabel.

“My daughter has done everything for this family. Perhaps you should consider whether your son deserves a life of his own.”

Mabel lowered her eyes.

At that moment, Jocelyn remembered the small safety camera they had installed in the kitchen after Mabel nearly slipped several months earlier.

Corinne had unplugged it, claiming it made her uncomfortable.

However, the device automatically uploaded short motion recordings before losing power.

Everett opened the camera application.

The files were still there.

What the Camera Recorded

The first video showed Corinne removing Mabel’s dinner plate before she had finished eating.

In another, Corinne ordered her to clean a spill while she stood nearby scrolling through her phone.

A third recording showed Corinne telling Mabel that no one would believe an elderly woman who kept forgetting details.

The room fell silent.

Corinne’s mother stopped speaking.

Her brothers looked toward the floor.

Then Everett opened a recording from the previous week.

Corinne was photographing documents from the home office while speaking on the phone.

“The house cannot be sold while she is still here,” she said in the video. “Once Everett becomes the only person making decisions, everything will be easier.”

The final clip had been recorded that morning.

Corinne placed an authorization form in front of Mabel and guided her hand toward the signature line.

“Everett has already decided,” she told her. “You are only making this harder for him.”

Everett closed the application.

His hands were cold, but his voice was steady.

“Everyone needs to leave.”

Corinne moved toward him.
