How Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn once helped Diana and her boys escape

In the mid-90s, Princess Diana was at the center of a relentless media storm, grappling with a failing marriage, constant paparazzi attention, and the immense pressure of her royal status.

Yet, in the midst of all the chaos, a surprising and heartwarming story emerged—one where Diana found an unexpected refuge on a secluded ranch in Colorado, thanks to actor Kurt Russell and his longtime partner, Goldie Hawn.

A Chance Meeting at a London Film Premiere

The story began in 1991 when Kurt Russell met Princess Diana at a royal screening of his film Backdraft in London. The encounter, though brief, would set in motion a series of events that offered Diana a much-needed escape. Reflecting on the moment, Kurt described it as surreal:

“I met her—[with] Prince Charles—it was a screening of Backdraft, a movie. They were doing a royal thing. I was in between the two, kind of interesting at the time!” he shared on the Australian talk show The Project in 2016.

At the time, Diana and Charles’ marriage was far from the fairytale image they had once portrayed. Their relationship was already showing deep cracks, and the strain of their separation was becoming increasingly public.

The Most Hunted Woman of Her Time

Diana confided in Kurt about the overwhelming pressure she faced from the media. She wasn’t just a royal figure—she was a mother and a woman trying to navigate her own life while constantly being pursued by photographers. Her brother, Charles Spencer, once described her as “the most hunted person of the modern age,” and he wasn’t wrong.

According to Time, Diana was the most photographed person in the world, with paparazzi being offered up to £500,000 ($656,000) for even the most candid or blurry shots. Within the industry, she was even dubbed “the Princess of Sales.”

As a Hollywood star, Kurt Russell was no stranger to the downside of fame, having had his own run-ins with intrusive photographers. Understanding Diana’s predicament, he made an offer that would provide her with a rare moment of peace.

At the Backdraft premiere in 1991, he extended a simple yet life-changing invitation:

“I said, ‘Come over to the ranch. We have a good long driveway, and it’s hard for the paparazzi to get in there. Maybe you would like to do that.’”

A Royal Escape

It didn’t take long for Diana to take him up on the offer. A year later, Goldie Hawn’s close friend, Sarah Ferguson—then the Duchess of York—reached out to see if the invitation was still open.

Kurt and Goldie were more than happy to welcome Diana, and soon, she arrived at their remote Colorado ranch with her two young sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. For ten days, they enjoyed the peace and quiet, shielded from the relentless gaze of the world.

Though Kurt was away filming at the time, Diana and her boys found solace at the ranch. It was one of the rare opportunities where she could step away from the chaos of her life, even if just for a short while.

“Goldie and Fergie knew each other through a friend,” Kurt later explained. “They put it together, and she brought the boys and they stayed at the house.”

During her stay, Diana formed an unexpected friendship with the couple’s housekeeper, Bonnie.

“Our housekeeper Bonnie became very close with her, and every Christmas she would get a nice card from Diana,” Kurt recalled fondly.

It was a small but deeply touching gesture that spoke volumes about the warmth Diana found in her brief retreat.

A Lasting Act of Kindness

Over the years, Kurt Russell has spoken openly about Diana’s visit, reflecting on what it meant to him. In an interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, he shared:

“I mentioned that we lived on a ranch in Colorado that might be a nice getaway. And she said maybe sometime I could do that.”

And so, it became more than just a vacation—it was a moment of kindness that left a lasting impact. Though her visit remained largely out of the public eye, it wasn’t about secrecy. It was about humanity, connection, and the kind of generosity that exists beyond titles and fame.

Diana’s time at the ranch serves as a poignant reminder that even under the weight of immense public scrutiny, moments of peace can still be found. And sometimes, the people who provide those moments are the ones you least expect.
