But Caroline’s investigator soon discovered that it belonged to a thirty-year-old woman named Paige Bennett.
And Paige was expecting a baby.
The Woman in the Photograph
Two days later, Caroline called me into her office.
A licensed investigator, Daniel Mercer, had obtained publicly available information and documented Grant’s recent visits to an apartment complex in Frisco.
He showed me a photograph.
Grant was standing outside a medical building beside a visibly pregnant brunette.
His hand rested gently against her back.
The expression on his face was one I recognized.
It was the same expression he used to give me when we talked about having children.
“Her name is Paige Bennett,” Daniel explained. “She’s been seeing your husband for approximately eight months.”
I stared at the picture.
“Does she know he’s married?”
“Yes. But we don’t know what he’s told her about your relationship.”
I felt strangely empty.
For months, Grant had insisted that our marriage was perfectly fine.
He had even suggested we begin planning for a family.
All while another woman was preparing to have his child.
But his affair was only part of the story.
Daniel had also discovered that Grant had recently consulted a divorce attorney.
Caroline obtained a copy of a proposed settlement agreement that Grant’s attorney had formally sent to her office after learning she represented me.
The document demanded that I transfer my company shares to Grant in exchange for a relatively small payment.
It also included broad confidentiality provisions and a release of certain financial claims.
Caroline studied it carefully.
“His attorney may have been given a completely false account of your marriage,” she said. “Nothing here proves the attorney knew about the recordings or the staged photographs.”
“Why would Grant think I’d sign this?”
Caroline looked at me sadly.
“Because he intended to frighten you into believing you had no better option.”
That was when I understood.
Grant didn’t need a judge to take my shares.
He wanted me to surrender them myself.
The Brother Who Finally Told the Truth
I moved into a furnished apartment under a short-term lease.
Grant believed I was staying with a colleague because I needed space to think about our marriage.
He called constantly.
“Meredith, you’re acting like a stranger. Come home so we can talk.”
I never told him about the recording.
Meanwhile, Daniel helped me arrange a meeting with Travis.
We chose a quiet outdoor café in Richardson.
I attended voluntarily and recorded my own conversation after discussing the circumstances with Caroline.
Travis arrived looking exhausted.
He sat across from me without ordering anything.
“Grant says you’re thinking about divorce,” he began.
“I know about the photographs.”
His face changed.
“What photographs?”
“The ones you were supposed to take after making me believe I was simply falling asleep in your car.”
He stared at the table.
I continued.
“I also know Grant planned to use them to force me to sign away my company shares.”
Travis swallowed.
“Meredith, you don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
For several moments, he said nothing.
Finally, he began talking.
Grant had promised him a promotion and financial help with his debts.
In return, Travis was supposed to create situations that could be photographed and presented as evidence that Meredith had been secretly involved with him.
Grant believed the resulting scandal would damage my professional reputation and create enough pressure to make me accept his settlement.
“He said nobody would believe you over both of us,” Travis admitted.
I felt tears rising.
“Did you know I was getting sick during those rides?”
Travis nodded.
“Grant told me what to give you. I knew it could make you confused and sleepy. I should have stopped.”
“And when I told him I was frightened?”
Travis covered his face.
“He knew.”
Those two words hurt more than anything else.
My husband had watched me question my own health while knowing exactly why I was afraid.
Travis continued.
“He told Paige you were unstable and trying to ruin the company. She didn’t know about the photographs. At least, I never heard him tell her.”
I saved the recording.
Then I stood.
“You need to tell the investigators what you just told me.”
He looked up, terrified.
“Am I going to lose everything?”
I answered quietly.
“You should have thought about that before helping him take everything from me.”
The Evidence That Changed Everything
Caroline helped me make a formal report to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
Investigators reviewed my recordings, medical history, and the financial information we had collected.
I also provided the clothing and other items I had preserved from the final ride, including the remaining water.
My doctor arranged further medical evaluation.
A toxicology examination performed close to the incident found evidence consistent with exposure to a sedating medication.
The results couldn’t explain every earlier episode, but they supported my account of the most recent one.
Investigators separately worked to establish where the medication had come from.
Travis eventually retained his own attorney and cooperated with authorities.
He provided messages, financial records, and information about the locations where Grant had arranged the photographs.
Investigators also obtained additional evidence through the appropriate legal process.
Over the following weeks, the picture became clearer.
Grant had been transferring company money without proper authorization.
Some of those payments supported Paige’s apartment and personal expenses.
Others had gone to Travis.
The company’s independent directors began reviewing suspicious transactions after receiving information that raised concerns about Grant’s conduct.
What started as my private nightmare was becoming a much larger investigation.
And Grant still believed he could talk his way out of it.
The Morning His Perfect Image Collapsed

Six weeks after I left our condominium, Sutton Freight Solutions held an emergency board meeting at its headquarters in Irving.
Grant arrived wearing a charcoal suit and carrying his usual leather briefcase.
He expected to discuss an internal financial review.
Instead, the board informed him that he was being placed on administrative leave while independent counsel examined the company’s records.
According to a director who later testified, Grant reacted angrily.
“This is my family’s company. You can’t treat me like some dishonest employee.”
The board chair replied calmly.
