What Wren Heard in the Kitchen

Judge Caldwell gave Wren time to breathe before continuing.

“What truth were you told to hide?”

The child looked nervously at Bianca.

“The things she said when Daddy wasn’t being nice.”

Bianca straightened in her chair.

“This is completely inappropriate. A child can easily misunderstand—”

“One more interruption and you will be removed,” the judge warned.

Wren held Buttons more tightly.

“Bianca told me I couldn’t call Eliza ‘Mommy’ anymore. She said the new baby would make Daddy forget about me and that I would have to live somewhere else.”

Eliza covered her mouth as tears slipped down her face.

“Did your father hear her say that?” the judge asked.

Wren nodded.

“He said she was joking, but she didn’t look like she was joking.”

Bianca stared at Graham, clearly expecting him to defend her. He kept his eyes on the table.

Then Wren revealed something no one had expected.

One night, she had woken after hearing Graham and Bianca arguing in the kitchen. She had walked downstairs and listened from behind the pantry door.

“Daddy said Eliza couldn’t find out about the hidden money before she signed the papers.”

Natalie immediately opened her notebook.

Graham’s attorney leaned close to him.

“What hidden money is she talking about?”

Graham did not answer.

“What else did you hear?” the judge asked.

“Bianca said they had to make Eliza believe everything was her fault. Daddy said Eliza would give him the house if she felt scared enough.”

Eliza felt the room tilt around her.

For months, Graham had made her question every thought she had.

When business statements disappeared, he said she had misplaced them. When the home security application stopped working, he blamed faulty equipment. When Eliza found one of Bianca’s earrings beneath the living-room sofa, Graham claimed she had attended a business meeting there.

Later, the earring vanished from Eliza’s dresser.

Graham told her she must have dreamed the entire incident.

Judge Caldwell studied him.

“Mr. Fenwick, did you conceal marital assets?”

“No, Your Honor. My daughter is repeating words she does not understand.”

Wren suddenly looked up.

“I understand the blue box.”

The courtroom fell silent again.

“What blue box?” Judge Caldwell asked.

“The one Daddy took from Eliza’s closet.”

Eliza’s heart began pounding.

Her late mother’s inheritance papers had been stored in a blue metal document box. Graham told her the box had been lost during a move.

“Where did he take it?” Natalie asked with the judge’s permission.

“To the storage place near the tire shop. I was in the car when he put it inside.”

The Tablet Beneath the Bed

The judge ordered a recess while court officers contacted child protection officials and financial investigators.

Before anyone could leave, Wren asked to show the judge something.

A bailiff brought forward a small tablet with a cracked corner.

“Daddy thought I was asleep,” Wren explained. “I recorded them because I wanted Eliza to believe me.”

Graham stood so suddenly that his chair fell backward.

“That device contains private business information!”

Two officers moved toward him.

“Remain seated,” one warned.

The recording began with muffled kitchen noises. Then Graham’s voice became clear.

“Once she signs away the house and the company shares, she won’t have the money to challenge anything.”

Bianca’s voice followed.

“What about the eight hundred thousand dollars?”

“It’s safe. She thinks the inheritance disappeared in a bad investment.”

Eliza gripped the edge of the table.

Her mother had left her that money so she would never be financially trapped. Graham had claimed it had been lost after an investment failed. Eliza had blamed herself for trusting him.

On the recording, Graham continued.

“Crestline Holdings owns the accounts. On paper, I have almost nothing.”

The room became perfectly still.

Natalie recognized the name. An envelope marked Crestline Holdings had arrived at the Fenwick home months earlier, but Graham claimed it belonged to a client.

The recording also captured Bianca asking what would happen to Wren.

Graham’s answer was colder than anyone expected.

“Taryn can keep her for a while. Once the divorce is final, we’ll decide whether bringing her back is convenient.”

Wren lowered her face against her stuffed rabbit.

Eliza no longer cared about the house, the business, or the missing inheritance. She only wanted to cross the courtroom and hold the child.

Judge Caldwell stopped the recording.

“This court will not approve the proposed divorce settlement. All financial accounts connected to Mr. Fenwick and Crestline Holdings are to be frozen immediately.”

She ordered an investigation of the storage unit, the business records, and every recent transfer.

Then she addressed Graham.

“Until the court completes an emergency custody review, you are not to contact Wren without supervision.”

Graham’s confidence disappeared.
