Part 1 of 3

The Divorce That Had Already Taken Too Much

For almost a year, my divorce had felt less like the end of a marriage and more like a test of how long one person could remain calm while someone else tried to wear her down.

My name is Audrey Mercer, and at thirty-five, I worked as a senior financial compliance analyst in Minneapolis. Numbers had always made sense to me. People were more complicated.

My husband, Brett Mercer, had become almost unrecognizable during our separation.

The charming man I had married eleven years earlier had been replaced by someone who delayed paperwork, moved money between accounts, and argued over expenses that had never mattered before.

Meanwhile, I was watching every dollar.

Then there was Tessa Rowland.

She was twenty-six, stylish, confident, and very publicly involved with the man I was still legally married to.

I knew about the expensive restaurants. I knew about the weekend trips. I knew about the designer shopping bags that appeared in her social media photos.

What I didn’t know—at least not yet—was exactly who had paid for them.

One Tuesday morning, Brett and I sat across from each other in a mediation room in downtown Minneapolis.

His attorney pushed a settlement proposal across the table.

Brett leaned back comfortably.

“Take the offer, Audrey. You get thirty percent of what’s left, and we both move on.”

I stared at him.

Thirty percent.

After eleven years.

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.

It was an email from the attorney handling my late aunt’s estate.

My aunt Marjorie Bellamy had passed away three weeks earlier. She had lived quietly outside Saratoga Springs, New York, in a modest farmhouse surrounded by maple trees.

I knew she had investments.

I had no idea how successful those investments had become.

I opened the attached document.

Then I saw the number.

$20,450,000.

For several seconds, I forgot about Brett.

I forgot about the mediation room.

I forgot how tired I was.

My aunt had left nearly everything to me.

More importantly, the inheritance had been placed in a carefully structured trust naming me as the sole beneficiary.

I read the amount twice.

Then a third time.

I had spent months wondering whether I could afford a decent apartment after the divorce.

Suddenly, that fear was gone.

But before relief could fully settle in, I noticed Brett’s attorney whispering urgently beside him.

Brett looked at his phone.

Then he looked at me.

His expression changed.

The Moment He Learned About the Money

Brett sat forward.

“We’re done negotiating.”

My attorney, Nina Caldwell, frowned.

“Excuse me?”

Brett pointed toward me.

“Audrey just inherited more than twenty million dollars.”

My stomach tightened.

Somehow, they had learned about the estate filing.

Brett’s entire attitude changed within seconds.

Five minutes earlier, he had wanted me to accept thirty percent of what remained from our marriage.

Now he was smiling.

“We’re still legally married,” he said. “That means I want my share.”

I stared at him.

“Your share of my aunt’s inheritance?”

“Half.”

He actually said it without hesitation.

“Ten million dollars.”

Nina immediately explained that the inheritance had been structured separately and had not been mixed with our marital accounts.

Brett barely listened.

He stood, buttoned his jacket, and looked directly at me.

“We’ll let the lawyers figure it out. I’m not walking away from ten million dollars.”

Then he left.

I watched the door close behind him.

Nina turned toward me.

“Don’t panic.”

I wasn’t panicking.

Something else had occurred to me.

For six months, I had quietly been reviewing our financial records.

And Brett had just given me a reason to finish the job.

He Brought His Girlfriend to the Next Meeting

Three weeks later, we met again.

This time, the conference room was on the twenty-fourth floor of Nina’s law firm overlooking downtown Minneapolis.

I arrived early carrying a large leather case.

Brett arrived late.

And he brought Tessa.

She walked in holding his arm, wearing an expensive cream-colored jacket and carrying a designer handbag.

Nina immediately stood.

“This is a private legal meeting.”

I gently touched Nina’s arm.

“It’s fine.”

She looked at me.

I nodded.

“Let her stay.”

Brett smiled as if my calmness meant I had surrendered.

He sat across from me while Tessa took the chair beside him.

“Let’s make this simple,” Brett said. “Twenty million. Ten for you, ten for me. We sign today.”

Tessa crossed her legs.

A gold bracelet flashed around her wrist.

I recognized it immediately.

That bracelet mattered.

So did her handbag.

So did the vacation photos she had posted eight months earlier.

Tessa leaned forward.

“Brett supported you for years. He deserves to start his new life comfortably too.”
