Part 2 of 3

Olivia frowned.

“Why?”

“Rachel left me a letter. I never opened it.”

The Letter Beneath the Ring

Rachel had always been organized. She kept receipts in labeled envelopes, wrote reminders on the refrigerator, and saved important documents in a small fire-resistant box.

But the letter I remembered wasn’t in that box.

It was in her jewelry case, beneath her wedding ring.

A few days before the accident, she’d told me to read it if I ever had reason to doubt someone close to us. I’d laughed and asked whether she was planning a surprise anniversary party.

She hadn’t laughed back.

Now Olivia accompanied me home, where I found the cream envelope exactly where Rachel had left it.

Inside were two handwritten pages.

Rachel had discovered unexplained payments from my construction company to a private security business called Blackthorne Solutions. She believed Michael was using false invoices to move company funds.

She’d also found messages connecting him to a woman named Jessica Lane.

My fiancée.

Rachel had known Jessica’s name before her accident.

I sat on the bedroom floor with the letter in my hands.

“I met Jessica almost a year after Rachel’s accident,” I told Olivia. “At a charity fundraiser. She said she’d lost someone too.”

Olivia read the name on the letter.

“We need to determine what connection she had to Blackthorne.”

At the bottom of the second page, Rachel had written:

The rest is where Emily learned to count the stars.

I knew immediately what she meant.

Rachel had decorated Emily’s bedroom ceiling with constellations when our daughter was a baby. Every night, she pointed to the stars while Emily counted them.

One small silver star above the window had always been different.

Rachel called it Emily’s wishing star.

Olivia and I went upstairs.

The star wasn’t painted. It was a small metal decoration fastened to the ceiling. When I gently removed it, I found a narrow compartment containing a memory card sealed in plastic.

Olivia photographed it before taking it for examination.

Later that evening, investigators confirmed that it contained financial records and a video Rachel had made.

I watched my wife appear on a computer screen for the first time in three years.

Her hair was tied back, and she looked tired.

“Daniel, I’ve found evidence that Michael has been moving money through false construction invoices,” she said. “A man named Victor Hale owns Blackthorne Solutions, and Jessica Lane has been meeting with him.”

Rachel paused and looked away from the camera.

“I confronted Michael. He told me I didn’t understand what I was looking at. Then he said Emily could be taken away from us if I kept interfering.”

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“I don’t know how serious that threat was,” Rachel continued. “But I’m frightened, and I need you to listen to me.”

The video ended.

Olivia waited while I tried to speak.

“She asked me about Michael the morning of the accident,” I finally said. “She wanted to know whether I’d trust him with everything.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That he was my brother.”

I looked at the blank screen.

Rachel had tried to warn me, and I’d mistaken her fear for an ordinary family disagreement.

Then Olivia’s phone rang.

She listened, asked two short questions, and stood.

“We’ve located the vehicle from the photograph,” she said. “It’s at a distribution center connected to Blackthorne Solutions.”

“Is Michael there?”

“We don’t know yet.”

For the first time since the wedding, I understood that Jessica’s fake pregnancy wasn’t the center of this story.

It was the distraction that had nearly kept me from finding out what happened to Rachel.

PART 2 — WHAT RACHEL KNEW

The Brother They Found

Police located Michael alive inside the distribution center later that evening.

He had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Victor Hale, the owner of Blackthorne Solutions, was gone.

Investigators also recovered equipment connected to a surveillance system installed at my house.

Jessica had arranged for additional security cameras months earlier, explaining that my company’s public profile made them necessary.

I’d approved the invoices without asking many questions.

Now I learned that the system included cameras covering our kitchen and the hallway outside Emily’s bedroom. Investigators were examining who had access to the recordings.

“Was someone watching my daughter?” I asked Olivia.

“The system could access those areas. We’re still determining who used it and when.”

I wanted to demand answers she didn’t yet have.

Instead, I called Sarah.

Emily was asleep on her couch, wrapped in a blanket with a stuffed elephant Rachel had given her. Sarah assured me the doors were locked and that she’d stay with Emily until I arrived.

I drove straight there.

For the next two days, I canceled every meeting at my company and worked with investigators to secure our accounts and review the surveillance equipment.

I also arranged for Emily to speak with a child therapist.

She’d been carrying an adult secret for weeks, and I wasn’t going to make her responsible for uncovering anything else.

Meanwhile, the financial investigation moved quickly.

Company records showed that millions of dollars had passed through false invoices associated with Blackthorne Solutions. Messages linked Michael, Victor, and Jessica to those transactions.

One exchange was particularly disturbing.

Jessica had written:

The pregnancy story is working. Daniel has stopped asking questions.

Another message referred to a meeting with an estate-planning attorney after our wedding.

Jessica had told me she wanted us to update our wills before the baby arrived. I’d agreed in principle but hadn’t scheduled anything.

Now investigators were examining drafts she’d exchanged with the attorney concerning a proposed marital trust and future control of certain assets.

No trust had been executed.

But the documents showed that Jessica had been preparing to ask me for far more than a wedding ring.

Michael’s Explanation

Michael requested a meeting through his attorney.

Olivia advised me to wait until investigators had completed their interviews, but eventually a supervised conversation was arranged.

He sat across from me in a small conference room, looking older than he had at the wedding.

“Daniel,” he began, “I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

“Then tell me what happened to Rachel.”

He stared at his hands.

“I was taking money from the company. It started with bad investments and gambling debts. I thought I could replace it before anyone noticed.”

“How much?”

“Almost four million dollars.”

I couldn’t speak.

I’d trusted Michael with financial oversight because he’d been with the company from its earliest years. He’d helped me turn a small construction business into a successful development firm.

“Victor helped you move the money?”

Michael nodded.

“He knew people who could make the transactions look legitimate. Jessica worked with him.”

“And Rachel found out.”

“She came to me with the records. She wanted me to tell you everything and go to the authorities.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I was terrified of losing everything.”

I leaned forward.

“Tell me about the bridge.”

Michael swallowed.

“Victor said Rachel had to be frightened into handing over the evidence. He told me someone would interfere with her car.”

“You knew?”

“I didn’t know exactly what he planned.”

“But you knew her car might not be safe.”

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.”

“Yes.”

I looked away from him.

“What happened that night?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Rachel called me from the road. She said something was wrong with the brakes.”

For a moment, I could hear nothing except the low hum of the ventilation system.

“She called you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you call emergency services?”

Michael shook his head.

“I called Victor. He told me not to get involved.”

I stared at my brother.

“You knew Rachel was driving a car that might have been tampered with, and you called Victor instead of getting help?”

“I panicked.”

“You had time to call someone, Michael. You made a choice.”

He began crying.

“I know.”

“And afterward, you signed the paperwork to remove the damaged part.”

“Victor said I’d be blamed for everything if investigators found it.”

I remembered Michael sitting beside me at Rachel’s funeral. He’d held Emily’s hand and told me to concentrate on my daughter while he handled the insurance arrangements.

I’d hugged him and thanked him.

“You let me believe she was alone,” I said.

“Daniel, I’m sorry.”

“You knew she called for help.”

He covered his face.

“I’m sorry.”

I stood.

He reached toward me, but I moved away.

“Rachel trusted you. Emily trusted you. I trusted you.”

He didn’t look up.

“I know.”

I left without another word.

Outside, I sat in my car for almost twenty minutes before I could turn the key.

Jessica’s Other Life

Investigators eventually established that Jessica had been associated with Victor’s business long before she met me.

She’d approached me at the charity gala eleven months after Rachel’s accident, claiming she’d experienced a similar loss.

I’d believed her.

She’d been patient when I struggled with grief, helped organize family dinners, and encouraged me to move forward. Whenever Emily complained that Jessica treated her differently when I wasn’t home, I told myself that forming a blended family took time.

Now I understood why Jessica had been so determined to win my confidence.

She knew about the financial investigation Rachel had begun, and she knew Michael feared I might discover it.

Her pregnancy claim had pushed our wedding forward.

The proposed trust documents suggested she also intended to gain influence over my finances after we married.

Jessica’s attorney maintained that Victor had pressured her and that she hadn’t understood the full extent of his criminal activities.

But investigators recovered messages in which she discussed the fake pregnancy, my estate arrangements, and ways to discourage Emily from asking questions.

There was no evidence that Emily had been physically harmed. Still, the pressure Jessica had placed on her was enough for me to understand why my daughter had been so frightened.

One evening, Emily asked me something while we were eating dinner at Sarah’s house.

“Daddy, are you still sad about the wedding?”

I put down my fork.

“I’m sad that Jessica lied to us.”

“Are you mad at me?”

“No. Why would I be?”

She looked at her plate.

“Because everyone was shouting. And Jessica cried.”

I moved my chair closer.

“Emily, Jessica was responsible for what she did. You didn’t make her lie.”

“But I used the pin.”
