‘Disrespectful’: Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood’s Performance at Jimmy Carter’s Funeral Caused a Stir – VIDEO

Former President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 after spending the final 19 months of his life in hospice care. During his funeral, long-time friends and country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood paid tribute with a rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

Brooks and Yearwood, who first connected with the Carters through a Habitat for Humanity building project, made a rare public appearance at the funeral. This was notable as Brooks had recently faced sexual assault allegations from a former employee, which he denied. In October 2024, Brooks told People, “I trust the system, I do not fear the truth, and I am not the man they have painted me to be.”

The couple also attended President Carter’s 100th birthday celebration in St. Paul, Minnesota, during the 2024 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Week Project.

While many appreciated their tribute, others criticized the choice of “Imagine,” especially given the setting in an Episcopal cathedral. The lyrics, which include lines like “Imagine there’s no heaven / It’s easy if you try / No hell below us / Above us, only sky,” sparked backlash. One commenter noted, “Of all the songs to play at a funeral; being held in a church! Horrible.” Another added, “What a bad choice of song at a devout Christian’s funeral.”

Despite the criticism, many defended Brooks and Yearwood, arguing that “Imagine” carries a profound message of peace, unity, and bridging divides—values that aligned with Carter’s humanitarian efforts. In previous interviews, President Carter had mentioned that “Imagine” was his favorite song, describing it as a powerful anthem for shared humanity.

After the funeral, Brooks and Yearwood expressed their heartfelt tributes to President Carter. Brooks shared, “President Carter, the legacy you and Rosalynn have left us is as beautiful as the life you lived,” highlighting the joy and determination Carter brought to his causes. Yearwood echoed these sentiments, writing, “Rest easy, Mr. President. Your legacy of love, along with Mrs. Rosalynn’s, will endure for all time.”

The couple did not comment on the controversy surrounding their performance.
