My Daughter Knew More

That evening, Hadley quietly entered my bedroom.

“Dad, there’s something else.”

I put my phone down.

“Tell me.”

“Mr. Gavin comes here sometimes when you’re asleep.”

I tried not to react.

“Inside the house?”

She nodded.

“Mom tells me not to wake you.”

The next morning, I visited another branch of Corinne’s bank and asked about accounts under my name.

There was one I had never opened.

It contained tens of thousands of dollars in unexplained cash deposits.

The employee associated with opening it was Corinne.

My truck.

My access card.

A storage unit in my name.

A bank account in my name.

Missing bourbon.

Everything pointed in one direction.

Me.

The Letter in Her Purse

Two nights later, Corinne left her purse on a dining chair.

I normally would never have searched it.

But by then, normal rules belonged to a marriage I no longer recognized.

Inside was a receipt for a duplicate truck key.

Then I found an envelope.

It was addressed to state investigators.

Inside was an unsigned letter identifying me as the person responsible for the missing barrels.

It mentioned Unit 214.

My truck.

My work schedule.

The mysterious bank account.

The writer even claimed to be frightened of me.

There was no mention of Gavin.

No mention of Tate.

No mention of Corinne.

That was when I finally understood why my clothes were already packed for disposal.

My wife was preparing for me to be blamed.

I Changed One Thing

My first instinct was to confront her.

Instead, I waited.

The letter had not been mailed yet.

That gave me one opportunity.

I kept Corinne’s original letter and prepared another page for the same envelope.

I did not write that I was innocent.

I simply gave investigators information they could verify.

I wrote that another shipment would likely be moved on Sunday night.

I gave them Tate’s name.

Gavin’s name.

The storage unit.

The bank account.

Most importantly, I explained that while my truck was being used, I would be physically inside the bourbon warehouse, surrounded by coworkers and security cameras.

Then I returned the envelope to Corinne’s purse.

Three days later, she left the house for several hours.

I asked no questions.

The Investigator Who Believed the Evidence

On Friday, Russell called me into his office again.

A state investigator named Miles Keating was waiting.

He placed my replacement letter on the desk.

“Did you write this?”

Instead of answering immediately, I took Corinne’s original letter from my jacket.

“Before I answer that, please read this.”

Miles read both letters carefully.

Then he looked at me.

“Start from the beginning.”

I told him everything.

Hadley.

The garbage bags.

My father’s coat.

The truck.

Unit 214.

The bank account.

Gavin.

When I finished, Miles leaned back.

“If you had come to us two weeks ago without this letter, you would have had a difficult time explaining what we had already found.”

That frightened me more than I expected.

Then he tapped Corinne’s original letter.

“But whoever wrote this knew details that weren’t public.”

He asked me to do one thing.

Go home.

Act normal.

And work Sunday night exactly as planned.

Sunday Night

Before leaving for work Sunday, I arranged for Hadley to sleep at her friend’s house.

She hugged me at the door.

“Are they going to take you away?”

The question nearly broke me.

I knelt in front of her.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

“Then when this is over, tell me everything.”

“I will.”

A coworker drove me to work.

My pickup remained in the driveway.

So did the spare key in our kitchen.

Shortly after one in the morning, security cameras recorded me inside the warehouse.

Around half an hour later, I stepped outside for coffee.

From the elevated loading area, I could see part of the distant service road.

Headlights appeared.

Then I recognized the vehicle.

My truck.

I was standing hundreds of yards away while someone else drove it down the road.

I wanted to follow.

But Miles had given me one instruction.

Stay where the cameras could see me.

So I went back inside.

The Door to Unit 214 Opened

Tate arrived at the storage facility later that night.

Several bourbon barrels were covered beneath a tarp in my truck.
