Part 2 of 3

Everett was around forty, dressed in a charcoal suit with no visible designer logo. His manner was controlled, almost unreadable.

He placed a thick folder on the table between us.

“Camille believes I manage regional operations for a transportation company,” he said.

“Is that not true?”

“It is one of the things I do.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were financial statements, company registrations, wire records, and photographs of signed agreements.

Everett explained that he owned several privately held businesses through a network of trusts and investment companies. Camille had never known the full scale of his holdings because he had deliberately kept his personal life separate from his work.

She had mistaken privacy for lack of ambition.

Grant had mistaken it for weakness.

Together, they had created false invoices and moved nearly $2 million from one of Everett’s companies.

“They believed the transfers would look like legitimate vendor payments,” he said.

I studied the records.

The plan was reckless, but not careless. Someone had spent months preparing it.

“They were planning to combine your money and mine,” I said.

Everett nodded.

“They already have.”

He showed me a transfer chain connecting my missing savings, the loan against my home, and the money taken from his company.

All of it had moved into a newly created property business.

“They are buying a house,” I said.

“A $3 million estate outside the city.”

I looked up.

“And you allowed the payment to go through.”

For the first time, Everett smiled.

It was not a warm smile.

“The company selling them the property belongs to one of my trusts.”

I understood immediately.

Grant and Camille believed they were hiding stolen money inside an expensive home.

In reality, they had sent the money back into Everett’s corporate structure.

“They do not own the house,” I said.

“They signed a long-term occupancy agreement that they never read carefully.”

Everett leaned back.

“Their greatest weakness is not greed. It is certainty. They are completely certain they are smarter than everyone around them.”

A Proposal Without Romance

Everett’s attorneys had already prepared a civil case, while investigators were reviewing the suspicious transfers.

However, Grant had mixed personal funds, borrowed funds, and business funds across several accounts. The records were connected, but the case would become much stronger if Everett and I formally combined our claims.

Then Everett made an unusual proposal.

“Marry me.”

I thought I had misunderstood him.

“Excuse me?”

“A temporary legal marriage,” he said. “Our attorneys will protect our separate assets. The marriage will create a shared financial interest and allow our legal teams to combine several claims without delays.”

I stared at him.

“You are asking me to marry a stranger to strengthen a financial case.”

“I am asking you to form a legal alliance.”

He slid a contract across the table.

The agreement stated that the marriage would be temporary, neither person would gain access to the other’s property, and the arrangement could end once the case was resolved.

Everett would also pay me a consulting fee for helping trace the transfers and prepare the financial evidence.

“How much?”

“One and a half million dollars.”

Before I could answer, Theo entered the room carrying additional documents.

His face was tense.

“There is another problem,” he said.

He showed us the loan guarantee.

Douglas Weller had pledged his home and investment accounts to support Grant’s $500,000 loan.

Celeste had signed as well.

They had not merely supported their son emotionally.

They had helped finance his plan.

Theo looked at me.

“If Grant defaults, the lender can claim the collateral.”

I remembered Celeste entering my house with packing boxes.

I remembered Douglas telling me to leave peacefully.

They had placed their own future behind Grant because they believed I would never challenge him.

I picked up the pen.

“Where do I sign?”

The Celebration Built on Borrowed Money

Two weeks later, Grant and Camille announced their engagement.

They also announced that they had purchased a magnificent estate in the countryside.

Celeste posted photographs online almost every day.

There were marble floors, tall windows, a heated pool, and a grand staircase that curved through the center of the house.

One caption read:

A new beginning for the family our son was always meant to have.

Another said:

Some people build lives. Others only build careers.

I saved every post.

Then a formal invitation arrived at the corporate apartment Everett had arranged for me.

Grant and Camille were hosting an engagement celebration at Briarwood Country Club. Nearly three hundred guests had been invited.

Inside the envelope was a handwritten message from Celeste.

You may attend if you would like to see what happiness looks like.

I called Everett.

“They invited me.”

“Good,” he said. “The account restrictions begin that afternoon.”

Theo later confirmed that Douglas had used another credit line to help pay for the event.

The flowers, entertainment, catering, and designer decorations were all funded by borrowed money connected to the same collateral.

They were not simply celebrating too early.

They were celebrating on top of a floor that was already beginning to collapse.

The Courthouse Agreement

Everett and I married on a Thursday morning at the Mecklenburg County courthouse.

There were no flowers, photographs, or family members.

I wore a tailored navy suit. Everett wore gray.

The ceremony lasted less than five minutes.

When the clerk asked whether we accepted the legal agreement, we both said yes.

Outside the courthouse, Everett looked at me.

“Do you regret it?”

“Ask me after the party.”

That evening, I prepared for the first time in weeks without feeling like someone’s abandoned wife.

I chose an emerald green gown with a high neckline and a clean, elegant shape. It was striking without being excessive.

When I looked in the mirror, I barely recognized the woman staring back.

Not because of the dress.

Because she was no longer afraid.

Everett arrived in a midnight-blue tuxedo.

He offered his arm.
