He paused.
“I need to know who is hoping I recover…and who is hoping I never return.”
Suddenly the strange atmosphere in the house made sense.
A Company With Too Many Secrets
Adrian explained that shortly before the accident, he had questioned several major vendor contracts worth tens of millions of dollars.
The prices were inflated.
Some vendors had almost no operating history.
Money had been routed through unnecessary consulting companies.
He had planned a full internal review.
Then the accident happened.
During his recovery, Bryce took control of daily operations.
Files Adrian remembered reviewing disappeared.
Access records were altered.
Approvals appeared under Adrian’s credentials even during periods when he could barely remain awake long enough to hold a conversation.
Still, Adrian refused to make reckless accusations.
“I’m not interested in blaming someone because I’m angry,” he told me. “I want facts.”
He asked only one thing from me.
“Do your job exactly as you normally would. Don’t investigate anyone. Don’t listen at doors. Just keep my rehabilitation private.”
I agreed.
Less than a week later, Vanessa walked into my room carrying an envelope.
She placed it on my desk.
“There’s twenty thousand dollars in there.”
I did not touch it.
“Why?”
She folded her arms.
“I want to know whenever Adrian’s attorney visits. If executives come to speak privately with him, I want their names. If you hear something important, you tell me.”
I pushed the envelope back.
“I’m being paid to care for Adrian, not report his private conversations.”
Her expression hardened.
“You’re an employee, Claire. Don’t forget that.”
I met her eyes.
“That is exactly why I know where my responsibility begins and ends.”
I told Adrian that afternoon.
He did not look surprised.
He looked disappointed.
The Name I Never Expected to See
Several days later, Adrian’s attorney, Martin Hargrove, arrived with documents from the company’s preliminary audit.
I was helping Adrian adjust his position when one of Martin’s folders slipped onto the floor.
A page slid out.
I picked it up.
My eyes caught a familiar name.
Nathan Whitmore.
I froze.
Martin noticed.
“Claire?”
I handed him the page.
“Nathan is my ex-husband.”
Adrian frowned.
“He works for Mercer Ridge?”
I nodded slowly.
Nathan had always described Westbridge Holdings to me as though it were the center of his universe.
What I had never realized was that Westbridge had recently been absorbed into Mercer Ridge’s national finance division.
Nathan was now an associate financial manager inside Adrian’s corporation.
And his name appeared among employees connected to the questionable transactions.
That night, Nathan called me repeatedly.
I ignored him.
Then a message arrived.
“Stay out of company matters you don’t understand.”
Another followed.
“You have no idea what you’re getting involved in.”
I stared at the screen.
Nathan had never been told where I worked.
Which meant somebody inside Adrian’s circle had told him.
For the first time, I understood how deeply everything might be connected.
The Woman I Least Expected Came Forward
The next surprise came from Tessa Caldwell.
The same woman whose message had ended my marriage.
She contacted me asking to meet.
My first instinct was to delete it.
Then she wrote:
“I have documents Nathan gave me. I think you need to see them.”
I immediately contacted Martin.
We met Tessa at his downtown office.
She arrived carrying a flash drive and a thick folder.
Her hands were shaking.
“Nathan told me these were routine corrections,” she said. “He asked me to clean up several financial spreadsheets before an outside review.”
According to Tessa, payments had been divided into smaller amounts, making them less likely to trigger automated compliance alerts.
Vendor information had been changed.
Several internal approval chains had been bypassed.
Martin asked her who had issued the instructions.
Tessa hesitated.
Then she answered.
“Most of them came through Bryce Mercer’s executive office.”
Further review uncovered another connection.
One of the vendors receiving unusually large payments was linked to Vanessa’s relatives.
Suddenly her twenty-thousand-dollar envelope looked very different.
The Family Finally Turned on Itself
When Adrian formally ordered a full forensic audit, Bryce stormed into his study.
Vanessa followed close behind.
“You’re accusing your own brother?” Bryce demanded.
Adrian remained seated.
“I’m reviewing company records.”
“I’m family.”
Adrian’s expression did not change.
“Family relationships do not erase financial records.”
Vanessa turned toward me.
“None of this happened until she moved into this house.”
Before I could respond, Adrian spoke.
“The problems existed long before Claire arrived.”
Bryce laughed bitterly.
“And now you trust some woman you barely know more than your brother?”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Your wife offered her twenty thousand dollars to report my private conversations.”
The room fell silent.
Margaret, who had entered during the argument, stared at Vanessa.
“You did what?”
Vanessa struggled to explain that she had only been protecting the family.
For months, Margaret had avoided taking sides between her sons.
This time she did not.
“If there is nothing to hide, let the auditors see everything.”
Bryce looked stunned.
“You’re choosing him over me?”
