Part 2 of 3

Grant continued.

“She listed your personal number, your office number, and your executive assistant’s line.”

Ethan felt cold.

“Nobody contacted me.”

“Someone made sure they couldn’t.”

Grant sent him a copy of the clinic record.

Sabrina’s handwriting appeared across the form.

Emergency contact: Ethan Marlowe.

Relationship: Husband.

Even though the divorce process had already begun, she had still written husband.

Then Grant sent another file.

A payment authorization.

Someone had paid an administrative employee at the clinic to redirect several messages connected to Sabrina’s account.

The electronic payment had come from a corporate spending card.

The card belonged to Celeste.

The Evidence Began Falling Apart

Ethan stayed at the office all night.

By sunrise, the case against Sabrina no longer looked convincing.

It looked manufactured.

Grant discovered that the hotel photographs had been digitally altered. Sabrina’s face had been placed onto images of another woman.

The timestamps did not even match her location.

On the day the photographs were supposedly taken in Louisville, Sabrina had been volunteering at a pediatric wellness event more than sixty miles away.

There were photographs, check-in records, and dozens of witnesses proving it.

The suspicious bank transfers were worse.

The transactions had been initiated through Ethan’s home network.

Not Sabrina’s laptop.

Celeste had accessed the system using temporary credentials she received months earlier while helping Ethan organize financial paperwork for a charity foundation.

Then came the bracelet.

Security logs from the smart safe showed the jewelry cabinet had been opened two days before the bracelet was discovered in Sabrina’s closet.

Sabrina had been out of town that weekend.

Celeste had been inside the house.

Ethan stared at the records until the numbers blurred.

But Grant had one more discovery.

“There’s something else.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Tell me.”

“The twins were born eight months ago.”

Ethan’s breathing stopped for a moment.

“Twins?”

“Two girls. Their names are Maisie and Nora.”

Ethan pressed his hand against his forehead.

“Is my name on the birth certificates?”

“No father was listed.”

Ethan felt an unexpected wave of pain.

Then Grant continued.

“But certified copies were requested three days after the births.”

Ethan slowly looked up.

“Who requested them?”

Grant’s answer came quietly.

“Celeste Arden.”

The room became completely still.

Celeste had known.

She had known Sabrina was pregnant.

She had known the babies had been born.

She had known before Ethan knew they existed.

And that afternoon, when Celeste threw money toward Sabrina on the roadside, she had known exactly who those babies probably were.

Two Little Girls Named Maisie And Nora

Grant located Sabrina the following morning.

She was staying in a small transitional housing program outside Georgetown, Kentucky.

The building was simple but clean.

Ethan arrived carrying diapers, formula, baby blankets, and several bags of groceries.

Then he stood outside Sabrina’s door for almost five minutes.

He had negotiated multimillion-dollar contracts without hesitation.

He had spoken before hundreds of employees.

He had made decisions that affected entire companies.

Yet knocking on that door felt harder than anything he had done before.

Eventually, he raised his hand.

Sabrina opened the door.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Ethan.”

He could not find the right words.

Behind her, one baby began making soft sounds from a crib.

Ethan looked past Sabrina.

There were two small bassinets against the wall.

Tiny clothes had been folded carefully on a secondhand dresser.

A rocking chair sat beside the window.

Sabrina followed his gaze.

Then she said quietly:

“You want to know, don’t you?”

Ethan looked at her.

She did not make him ask.

“Maisie and Nora are your daughters.”

His face changed.

For a moment, Ethan looked like someone had removed the floor beneath him.

He slowly stepped backward and rested one hand against the hallway wall.

“Mine?”

Sabrina’s eyes filled with emotion.

“Yes.”

He looked toward the babies again.

One had opened her eyes.

Ethan could barely breathe.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Sabrina’s expression hardened.

“I tried.”

The words stopped him.

“I called your office. I called your house. I called your assistant. I sent emails. I even went to your company once.”

Ethan stared at her.

“I never knew.”

“I know that now.”

Her voice trembled.

“But back then, every person I reached told me the same thing: Ethan does not want contact with you.”

He lowered his head.

There was no excuse available.

Even if Celeste had hidden the pregnancy, Ethan had still been responsible for the first mistake.

He had refused to listen.

“I found everything,” he said quietly. “The photographs. The transfers. The bracelet. The clinic payments.”

Sabrina’s eyes closed briefly.

“So now you believe me.”

The sentence was not angry.

That made it worse.

“Yes.”

Ethan swallowed.

“And I know believing you now cannot repair what happened then.”

Sabrina said nothing.

“I’m not asking you to take me back,” Ethan continued. “I’m not even asking you to forgive me. I just want the chance to take responsibility for my daughters.”

A baby began crying.

Sabrina turned toward the crib.

Ethan instinctively stepped forward, then stopped.

He waited.

Sabrina noticed.

After a moment, she pointed toward a folded blanket.

“Hand me that.”

He picked it up carefully.

Their fingers almost touched when he passed it to her.

It was not reconciliation.

It was not forgiveness.

But it was the first thing she had allowed him to do for his daughters.

The Engagement Dinner That Never Happened

Celeste believed Friday evening would be the announcement of their wedding date.

More than twenty friends and business associates had been invited to a private dining room at an upscale Lexington restaurant.
