Nathaniel stepped closer.

Voss looked directly at me.

Three hours after he left, I found that someone had entered my bedroom.

Nothing was missing.

But my notebook containing the twins’ symptoms had been moved.

The hallway security camera had also gone offline for eleven minutes.

Someone wasn’t looking for valuables.

Someone wanted to know what I had discovered.

What Was Drifting Through the Air

Nathaniel quietly hired an environmental testing specialist.

Samples were collected from the vent, the ductwork, and the scent system.

That evening, preliminary results arrived.

Alongside ordinary fragrance ingredients, the laboratory detected traces of a harmful chemical compound that had no legitimate reason to be inside an aromatherapy system.

Repeated low-level exposure could explain the boys’ headaches, weakness, nausea, appetite loss, and difficulty concentrating.

Nathaniel’s face went pale.

“Could this explain what has been happening to my sons?”

The specialist answered carefully.

“The pattern is consistent with prolonged exposure.”

Nathaniel turned away.

For months, doctors had studied the children’s bloodwork, diet, genetics, stress levels, and immune systems.

But the answer may have been floating through the air beside their beds.

Then we discovered something even more troubling.

Dr. Voss had requested access to that mechanical room almost a year earlier.

Around the same time, he had become the twins’ primary private physician.

The Forty-Two-Million-Dollar Secret

Mrs. Delaney reluctantly revealed another secret.

Shortly before Caroline’s passing, she had created a trust for Eli and Noah.

Nathaniel hadn’t known the details.

His attorney retrieved the documents.

The trust held approximately forty-two million dollars.

And its interim medical trustee was Dr. Malcolm Voss.

At first, Nathaniel assumed we had found the motive.

But the documents contained an important condition: Voss wouldn’t inherit the money if anything happened to the children.

Instead, the principal would transfer to a charitable foundation.

Then the attorney found another clause.

Voss received an annual administrative fee of two percent while the trust required active medical management.

Roughly $840,000 every year.

I looked at Nathaniel.

The children didn’t have to disappear for Voss to benefit.

They only had to remain medically dependent.

But money still wasn’t the whole story.

Mrs. Delaney was crying now.

“Caroline was afraid of him before the accident.”

Nathaniel froze.

“What did you just say?”

She explained that Caroline had begun changing passwords, locking away documents, and asking whether anyone had entered the nursery without permission.

Then Mrs. Delaney revealed something Nathaniel had never known.

The night before Caroline’s fatal car accident, she had prepared a letter for him.

Mrs. Delaney had given it to Dr. Voss.

“He told me you were too devastated to read it. He promised he would give it to you later.”

Nathaniel’s voice dropped.

“Where is my wife’s letter?”

The Safe Behind the Bookshelf

Dr. Voss had once used a private consultation room beside the Ashford library.

We searched it.

Behind a medical encyclopedia that looked cleaner than the books surrounding it, I discovered a small wall safe.

Mrs. Delaney suggested using the date of Caroline’s accident.

The lock opened.

Inside were financial records, a USB drive, old medical documents, and an envelope.

Nathaniel’s name was written across the front in Caroline’s handwriting.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

The first sentence changed his understanding of the previous four years.

“Nathaniel, if you’re reading this, something has happened to me. Please stop trusting Malcolm.”

Caroline wrote that Voss had once been her physician and, long before her marriage, someone she had dated.

She had discovered suspicious financial transfers connected to medical charities he controlled.

When she questioned him, Voss began suggesting to others that Caroline was emotionally unstable and imagining problems.

She planned to remove him from the twins’ trust.

She also feared someone had interfered with her car.

Then Nathaniel reached the final paragraph.

He stopped reading.

I asked what it said.

His voice was almost a whisper.

“Malcolm believed Eli and Noah were his children.”

The DNA Result He Couldn’t Accept

The USB drive contained years of records.

There were photographs of the twins at school, appointments, and family events, many apparently taken without Nathaniel’s knowledge.

There were trust-fee spreadsheets.

There were private messages between Caroline and Voss.

And finally, there was a DNA report.

Nathaniel opened it.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99 percent.

Nathaniel Ashford was the twins’ biological father.

Voss had known for years.

Yet he had refused to let go of his belief that the children somehow belonged to him.

Then we opened a file labeled “Treatment Monitoring.”

My stomach tightened.

It contained dates corresponding with cartridge replacements in the scent system.

Beside those dates were notes about the twins’ symptoms.

Their fatigue.

Their appetite.

Their headaches.

Their concentration.

Nathaniel pushed away from the desk.

“Call the authorities.”

This time, I didn’t stop him.

The Boys Were Gone

Investigators arrived quietly.

But before they could question Voss, he vanished from his private clinic.

His car was later found abandoned near a train station.

The Ashford estate was immediately placed under heightened security.
