Part 2 of 3

Richard approached the gate and smiled.

“Nathaniel, we’re both reasonable businessmen, and I’m certain we can resolve this misunderstanding without unnecessary publicity.”

I waited for him to explain.

“Send Olivia home, and I’ll make sure your eighty-million-dollar development receives the attention it deserves before Friday.”

I looked at him steadily.

“Your wife is an adult with the right to decide where she lives, and she isn’t something you can exchange for construction permits.”

His smile vanished.

“Then prepare for every agency in Massachusetts to examine your projects until your investors forget why they ever trusted you.”

Julia began documenting the encounter, including his statements concerning government approvals.

Richard removed papers from a leather folder.

They purported to establish that Olivia had a serious psychiatric disorder and was incapable of managing her affairs independently.

Julia requested the identity of the issuing physician and supporting court documentation.

Richard refused.

Then the guest cottage door opened.

Olivia walked toward us wearing a gray winter coat, her posture tense but determined.

When Richard saw her, he immediately softened his expression.

“Sweetheart, you’ve frightened everyone terribly, but I’ll forgive this episode if you come home with me right now.”

Olivia remained beside Julia.

“I’m not returning to your house, Richard, and I won’t allow you to describe my fear of you as a mental illness.”

He laughed dismissively.

“Without me, you’ll have no money, no home, and no professional future worth mentioning.”

She lifted her chin.

“I supported myself before meeting you, and I intend to do it again without surrendering my freedom.”

Julia informed him that Olivia was seeking protection through the appropriate courts and pursuing criminal complaints concerning the reported assaults.

An emergency protection order had been issued prohibiting contact under its specified conditions.

Richard stared at the documents, then pointed toward me.

“You’ve made a catastrophic mistake, Brooks, and I’m going to make sure your construction company pays for interfering in my marriage.”

I didn’t raise my voice.

“I won’t negotiate over another person’s safety, Senator, regardless of what you threaten to do to my business.”

He returned to his vehicle.

Only after the convoy disappeared did Olivia begin trembling.

Helen guided her indoors while Julia called to confirm arrangements for the next legal proceedings.

The confrontation hadn’t resolved everything.

In many ways, it had only begun.

Within two weeks, state inspectors and regulatory offices issued thirty-two notices or temporary work restrictions affecting my development.

Some concerned issues our engineers had already addressed, while others required documentation that should have been obtainable without prolonged delay.

Lenders became nervous.

Subcontractors worried about their schedules.

I spent nights reviewing inspection reports with our legal and engineering teams, determined to challenge improper actions through formal channels.

One evening, Olivia entered my library and found me surrounded by drawings, correspondence, and financing documents.

“Your company is suffering because you helped me, Nathaniel, and perhaps everything would improve if I simply disappeared somewhere else.”

I closed the report I was reading.

“Richard is responsible for his own retaliation, Olivia, and I won’t make you responsible for the consequences of his misconduct.”

She looked toward the stacked files.

“You could lose millions of dollars, and I have absolutely no way of compensating you for any of it.”

I shook my head.

“I didn’t help you because I expected repayment, and I’m not going to start treating your safety like a business transaction.”

She sat quietly opposite me.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Eventually, she asked whether I truly believed people could offer help without expecting control in return.

I told her I thought we should all be judged by what we did after making a promise.

She appeared to consider that answer long after our conversation ended.

PART 4 — THE DAY SHE TOOK BACK HER NAME

The legal proceedings unfolded over the following months.

Julia obtained independent medical assessments, preserved the threatening statements made outside my estate, and secured evidence concerning the questionable psychiatric documents.

The physician whose signature appeared on Richard’s papers denied having issued the purported conclusions.

Olivia gave detailed testimony about the assaults, financial restrictions, and attempts to isolate her from friends.

Richard appeared in court surrounded by attorneys, portraying himself as a devoted husband trying to protect an unstable wife.

But the evidence increasingly contradicted his account.

During one hearing, the pregnancy became part of the proceedings.

Richard immediately claimed that the expected child gave him a compelling reason to prevent the divorce.

Olivia answered without lowering her eyes.

“I would rather raise my child alone with very little money than teach that child that humiliation and violence are acceptable parts of marriage.”

The judge maintained protective restrictions and rejected the attempt to place Olivia under Richard’s personal control.

The divorce proceeded through the required legal process.

Two months later, the final decree took effect.

Olivia restored her maiden name, Olivia Carter.

She contacted Megan, her closest friend from culinary school, who was managing a small French-inspired bakery called Willow & Rye in Northampton.

Olivia prepared almond croissants and lemon-meringue tarts for a trial shift.

The owner tasted both before offering her regular employment.

For the first time in four years, Olivia’s ability mattered more than her marital status.

She rented an inexpensive two-bedroom apartment within walking distance of the bakery.

The building had no elevator, and the apartment sat on the fourth floor.

I worried about the stairs as her pregnancy progressed and offered to help locate a more accessible place.

She smiled but declined.

“I know you’re trying to help, Nathaniel, but I need to build a life that my own earnings can support.”

I respected her decision.

Helen contributed blankets and essential household items, while Raymond helped organize the move at Olivia’s request.

The first purchase Olivia made purely for herself was a pale-yellow ceramic mug decorated with small blue flowers.

She bought it at a farmers’ market for fifteen dollars.

Richard would have called it cheap.

Olivia used it every morning.

She told me later that drinking coffee from something she’d chosen herself felt surprisingly wonderful.

Meanwhile, an independent investigation examined Richard’s possible misuse of political influence.

Evidence concerning the inspection campaign and his threats became public, damaging his reputation and ending his attempt to secure his party’s nomination for another term.

Improper work restrictions on my development were withdrawn, and construction resumed.

By then, I had begun visiting Olivia on Saturday afternoons.

At first, I arrived carrying expensive groceries and gifts for the baby.

After several weeks, she stopped me at the apartment door.

“Nathaniel, I appreciate your kindness, but I don’t need you bringing enough groceries to feed an entire restaurant every weekend.”

I looked at the bags.

“I thought fresh fruit and nutritious food might make things easier while you’re working so hard.”

She gently took one bag from my hands.

“Then please understand that I want your company, not another person deciding what I should have.”
