“You’ll be bored.”

That was the moment I decided there was absolutely no chance I would stay home.

Allison gave me one warning.

“Do not threaten him. Do not provoke him. Do not create a scene. Let the facts speak louder than anger.”

Part 4 — The Gala

On Saturday evening, I wore a burgundy gown I had not touched in almost two years.

Ethan insisted on coming with me.

“You don’t have to be there,” I told him.

“I want to stay with you.”

I looked at him carefully.

“Then promise me you will not confront your father.”

He met my eyes.

“I promise.”

We arrived shortly after eight.

The ballroom was filled with champagne, elaborate flowers, investors, executives, and people wearing the polished expressions expected at corporate events.

David saw us from across the room.

I will never forget his face.

He walked toward us quickly.

“What are you doing here?”

“Attending the gala with my husband.”

“I told you that you didn’t need to come.”

“You didn’t say I was forbidden.”

Then he looked at Ethan.

“Why is he here?”

My son answered calmly.

“I’m your son. I assumed that was enough of a reason.”

David forced himself back into his corporate smile and directed us toward a table.

Then I saw Madison.

She wore a champagne-colored evening gown and a diamond necklace that caught the ballroom lights whenever she moved.

She looked completely at ease in David’s world.

For nearly an hour, I watched him try to maintain distance.

Eventually, habit defeated caution.

Conversation became laughter.

Laughter became closeness.

Then, when David apparently believed no one important was watching, he placed one hand against Madison’s lower back.

It was the exact same gesture from the restaurant photograph.

Under the table, Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Mom.”

I tightened my fingers around his.

“Don’t.”

“I only want to ask one question.”

Before I could stop him, Ethan stood.

He crossed the ballroom.

Then stopped directly in front of his father.

His voice was steadier than mine could have been.

“Dad, who is this woman?”

Madison smiled nervously.

“I work with your father.”

Ethan looked at David’s hand near her waist.

Then back at Madison.

“Does my dad hold all his female coworkers like that?”

The conversations around them began to disappear.

David pulled his hand away immediately.

“Ethan, that’s enough.”

My son took out his phone and snapped a photograph.

David’s face lost color.

“Delete that picture now.”

Ethan held the phone against his chest.

“Why?”

“Because I’m your father and I told you to.”

“Then tell me who she really is.”

I reached them and placed my hand on Ethan’s shoulder.

“Come with me.”

He looked up at me.

His eyes were suddenly bright with tears.

“Mom, he’s lying.”

David turned toward me.

“Megan, control your son.”

Something inside me changed.

For years, I had protected David.

I explained his absences to relatives.

I changed the subject when people noticed how often he missed family dinners.

I defended him when Ethan asked why his father never came to school events.

That ended in the ballroom.

“Do not speak about Ethan as if he caused any of this.”

Madison stepped backward.

“David, I think I should leave.”

He turned toward her immediately.

“Don’t go.”

That sentence destroyed the last fragile piece of hope I still carried.

He did not ask his wife to stay.

He asked his mistress.

Right in front of our son.

Part 5 — The Envelope

I looked directly at Madison.

“Did you know he was married?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

David closed his eyes.

“Madison…”

She shook her head.

“There’s no point pretending anymore.”

Her answer hurt more than I expected.

Some foolish part of me had hoped David had lied to her too.

He had not.

She knew about me.

She knew about Ethan.

David spoke sharply.

“We are not discussing our private lives in front of everyone.”

I looked around the ballroom.

“You brought your private life to your corporate gala.”

Then I reached into my handbag and removed a sealed envelope.

Inside was formal notice from Allison Grant’s office concerning the initiation of divorce proceedings and requests for preservation and forensic review of disputed financial assets.

I handed it to David.

“Your attorney can contact mine Monday morning.”

He stared at the law firm’s name.

“You hired a divorce lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“When I realized you had spent months preparing a future that excluded your wife and son.”

His entire demeanor changed.

He reached for my wrist.

“Megan, come outside and talk to me.”

I pulled away.

“Do not touch me.”

Beside me, Ethan had lost the hard confidence he had used while confronting his father.

He looked twelve again.

His eyes were wet.

That was the moment I understood how badly I had underestimated the damage.

David had not only betrayed me.

He had destroyed the image his son had built of him.

Ethan and I left in a rideshare.

For several minutes, he stared through the window as the lights of Manhattan passed outside.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

I turned toward him.

“For what?”

“For making everything happen in front of all those people.”

I put my arm around his shoulders.
