Life Short Tales Moral Stories

I Came Home With Groceries And Heard My Mother-In-Law Whisper Into Her Phone, “You Took The Wrong Woman. You Were Supposed To Take My Daughter-In-Law.” My Sister-In-Law Had Borrowed My Red Dress, So They Took Her Instead. I Started Recording Before Anyone Realized The Intended Target Was Standing Just A Few Feet Away.

Part 2 of 3

I avoided arguments.

I watched.

Evelyn received multiple private calls, disappeared for hours without explanation, and returned increasingly anxious. She once spent twenty minutes in the library whispering about money while repeatedly saying the phrase “after she comes back.”

On the fourth afternoon, a black SUV stopped beyond the estate gates.

Cassandra stumbled out.

She was barefoot, exhausted, and still wearing my red dress, although the fabric was torn and filthy.

“Mom, I thought they were never going to let me go.”

Evelyn ran toward her.

Ethan followed.

Then Evelyn saw me standing near the front door.

Her relief became hatred.

“Now you are going to prison.”

Ethan turned toward me.

“Look at what happened to my sister because of you.”

Before I answered, another vehicle entered the drive.

Charles stepped out.

He walked inside without greeting anyone and took the central chair in the living room.

“Everybody sit down.”

I connected my phone to the television.

Evelyn’s recorded voice filled the room.

“Rebecca does not matter anymore. We can deal with her later.”

Cassandra stopped crying.

“Mom, that is your voice.”

I looked at her.

“The people who took you were looking for me, Cassandra, because you were wearing my dress.”

Cassandra stared at Evelyn.

“Tell me she is lying.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Charles placed the DNA report on the table.

Ethan picked it up.

His face drained of color.

“What is this supposed to mean?”

Charles answered calmly.

“It means we will repeat the test independently tomorrow, and your mother will explain why a secret from thirty-four years ago apparently became important enough to put Rebecca in danger.”

Evelyn pointed at me.

“She is destroying this family.”

Charles did not raise his voice.

“Then you should have no objection to another DNA test.”

Silence filled the room.

Ethan finally turned toward me.

“Rebecca, I am sorry.”

I opened my handbag and removed the divorce documents my attorney had prepared that morning.

“You asked me to leave and told me you wanted a divorce before allowing me to explain why someone had tried to abduct me. I am simply giving you what you requested.”

I signed the papers.

At that moment, Charles’s phone rang.

His investigator had traced the ransom money.

Charles listened briefly before looking directly at Evelyn.

“We know which account funded the payment, and we also know who you contacted before Rebecca became the target.”

Evelyn stopped breathing for a moment.

Charles placed another file on the table.

The first name inside it was Gabriel Kane.

PART 3: The Man Behind the Old Lie

Ethan read the name twice.

“Who is Gabriel Kane?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Charles answered.

“Thirty-five years ago, he worked as a driver for a company where your mother was an executive assistant. Later, he accumulated convictions involving extortion, violent debt collection, and organized criminal activity.”

Ethan stared at his mother.

“What does he have to do with me?”

Evelyn began crying.

The truth emerged in fragments.

Before marrying Charles, Evelyn had been involved with Gabriel. When she met Charles, he was already a successful young financier with the wealth and social standing she wanted.

Soon afterward, she became pregnant.

She told Charles the child was his.

Gabriel later disappeared into criminal circles, and Evelyn claimed she lost contact with him.

Apparently, she had found him again when she needed somebody willing to frighten, abduct, or remove a woman who possessed dangerous information.

Ethan’s voice shook.

“You contacted my biological father to kidnap my wife?”

Evelyn covered her face.

“I only wanted her gone long enough to stop her from destroying everything.”

Cassandra pulled away when Evelyn tried to touch her.

“Those men kidnapped me because of you.”

“Cassie, please let me explain.”

“Do not touch me.”

That rejection wounded Evelyn more deeply than Charles’s anger.

Within days, evidence from Charles’s investigators was transferred to state and federal authorities. A court-authorized DNA test confirmed that Ethan was not Charles’s biological son.

Charles removed Ethan from executive responsibilities while the company reviewed succession arrangements and revised several elements of his estate plan.

I wanted none of it.

I wanted distance.

My divorce moved forward quickly because there were no children and relatively few disputed assets between Ethan and me.

He called repeatedly.

“I was terrified because Cassandra had disappeared.”

“I understand that.”

“My mother manipulated me.”

“I understand that too.”

“Then why can we not start again?”

I finally answered the question he kept asking.

“Because when I was frightened and asking you to listen, you decided accusing me was easier than believing me. I cannot build another marriage with someone who requires evidence before offering his wife basic trust.”

I left Connecticut and moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where my mother, Diane, had lived for several years.

With money from the divorce settlement and savings I already had, we rented a small building overlooking the Atlantic and converted the ground floor into a café.

My mother baked blueberry scones every morning.

I learned how to make espresso properly instead of pretending the automatic machine did everything.

For six months, life became quiet.

Then a black Cadillac Escalade began appearing near closing time.

I saw it three times over two weeks.

The fourth time, three men entered the café, ordered coffee, watched the room in complete silence, and left without finishing their drinks.

I called Charles.

He hesitated before answering.

“Gabriel Kane disappeared before federal agents could locate him. Evelyn remains under investigation, and we have reason to believe she has continued communicating through old associates.”

A cold pressure settled in my stomach.

“Do not confront anyone yourself,” Charles continued. “Call the authorities immediately if they return.”

Two nights later, my mother and I were cleaning after closing when something struck the front window.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Several men entered.

The last one through the doorway had gray hair and a deep scar cutting through one eyebrow.

I knew his face from the investigator’s file.

Gabriel Kane.

PART 4: The Second Threat

Gabriel looked around our damaged café with the bored confidence of somebody who believed fear belonged to other people.

“So you are Rebecca.”

I moved between him and my mother.

“What do you want?”

He smiled.

“The money Charles Hawthorne gave you, every dollar of it, and afterward you are going to apologize to Evelyn for what you did to her family.”

My mother was trembling behind me.

I was frightened too, but fear had stopped being a reason to surrender months earlier.

“Did Evelyn send you here?”

Gabriel’s smile widened.

“You ask too many questions for somebody whose windows are already broken.”

Before leaving, he dropped a piece of paper on the counter.
