At A Private Dinner, My Husband Tried To Open The Rare Wine We Had Saved For Eighteen Years—With The Woman He Chose After Our Marriage Fell Apart. Then The Sommelier Stopped Him And Said, “Nobody Is Authorized To Open That Bottle Tonight.” For The First Time, His Money Could Not Buy Permission.

Part 2 of 3

Harrison objected that divorce negotiations already involved excessive communication through attorneys.

Natalie responded without sympathy.

“You brought another woman to the place where you celebrated anniversaries with your wife, yet telephoning Julia for permission suddenly feels inappropriate.”

The humiliation did not come from Peter’s refusal. It came from the fact that Natalie finally understood the evening was never truly designed around her.

PART 3: THE WIFE WHO REFUSED TO FIGHT

Harrison called Julia after leaving the dining room and entering the winery’s quiet library.

She answered after several rings.

“Has something happened to Olivia or Caleb?”

Her first concern involved their children rather than the divorce.

“They are fine, although I need to discuss the bottle at Hawthorne Peak.”

Silence followed.

“You are at the winery tonight?”

“I brought several friends for dinner and requested the Cabernet we stored.”

“Who accompanied you?”

He hesitated before admitting Natalie was present.

Julia absorbed that information without raising her voice.

“You intended to open our anniversary bottle with the woman involved in ending our marriage.”

“The marriage was already damaged before Natalie became important.”

“That statement does not answer why you selected this particular wine.”

Harrison insisted the bottle had become valuable property and accused Julia of retaining control through outdated instructions.

“If you want the bottle tomorrow, I will contact Samuel and discuss releasing my interest,” she replied. “I will not use wine to force you to remain married.”

Her lack of resistance unsettled him.

“You have monitored that bottle for years.”

“I checked its condition because the promise once mattered, not because I intended to imprison you with it.”

“Then authorize its opening tonight.”

Julia became quiet.

“No, because you are using it to stage a victory over our marriage. Ask again tomorrow when the audience has gone, and if you still want it for yourself, we will decide calmly.”

Harrison accused her of embarrassing him before Natalie and their guests.

“I did not invite those people, request that bottle, or design your performance. The embarrassment belongs to the person who created the situation.”

Natalie had entered the library quietly enough to hear the final exchange.

After Harrison ended the call, she looked at him with open disappointment.

“You described Julia as desperate to prevent the divorce.”

“She has delayed negotiations repeatedly.”

“She just offered to release a bottle carrying eighteen years of meaning, while you became angry because she refused to participate in your spectacle.”

Harrison insisted Natalie was misreading Julia’s strategy.

“You wanted her to fight because defeating her would make tonight feel like choosing me.”

“I have already chosen you.”

“Then why does every important gesture still require Julia as the opponent?”

Natalie returned to the dining room and picked up the envelope.

Harrison attempted to stop her, but Samuel confirmed that Harrison could open the letter if he wished.

He finally broke the seal and handed the page to Natalie because reading Julia’s younger voice aloud felt impossible.

Natalie read slowly.

“If we open this bottle together, I hope it means we learned that the best things cannot be rushed. We are not saving it because it is expensive. We are saving it because waiting for something together feels like a promise.”

The room remained silent.

She continued.

“If we no longer recognize each other when the day arrives, I hope this bottle reminds us who we were before we began competing with the world.”

Natalie lowered the letter.

The document did not demand reconciliation. It merely preserved two exhausted people who once believed success would eventually grant them time.

“When you selected this bottle tonight, did you think about me?” she asked.

Harrison could not answer honestly.

Natalie removed the bracelet he had given her and placed it beside his glass.

“I will not become the woman you use to prove you won your divorce.”

She left the dining room alone.

PART 4: THE CHILDREN WHO REMEMBERED HIS ABSENCE

Harrison remained at Hawthorne Peak after his guests departed. Samuel returned the bottle to secure storage, but the letter stayed on the table.

Harrison called his attorney at eleven-fourteen and transmitted photographs of the original agreement. The attorney confirmed that mutual authorization controlled the bottle and warned that removing it without consent could complicate property negotiations.

For years, Harrison had assumed money could overcome any obstacle whose price appeared unreasonable. The bottle confronted him with something money could not convert into immediate ownership.

Samuel sat across from him.

“Your daughter once asked whether her mother requested this bottle after leaving you.”

Harrison looked up sharply.

Olivia had visited Hawthorne Peak several months earlier with Julia. She explained that her mother wanted nothing removed and merely asked that the original storage arrangement remain respected.

“Olivia believes I abandoned the family for work,” Harrison said.

“Did you?”

The directness irritated him until memories began answering.

He remembered missing Olivia’s college presentation and sending an expensive watch afterward. He missed Caleb’s final high-school game and arranged a luxury trip his son never requested.

Harrison treated money as proof of devotion because money remained the language he controlled.

When his children became angry, he described them as ungrateful. When Julia demanded presence, he accused her of forgetting how hard he worked to support them.

Years earlier, she placed an unopened package on his desk after another missed anniversary.

“You cannot keep purchasing apologies for events you chose not to attend.”

“I am working for this family.”

“You are working for yourself and calling the achievement ours whenever you need forgiveness.”

He dismissed her statement as resentment.

Eventually, Julia stopped requesting time because every request became another negotiation she expected to lose. Their separation arrived after she discovered Harrison and Natalie had crossed the boundary he kept refusing to name.

Shortly after midnight, Olivia returned his call.

“Were you truly planning to open Mom’s bottle with Natalie?”

“The bottle belongs to both of us, and I intended to resolve that technical issue.”

“It is not about ownership, Dad. It is about why humiliating Mom became necessary for you to enjoy anything new.”

“Your mother and I have both caused damage.”
