Pope Francis’ ‘special’ final meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla as he d.i.e.s aged 88

Part 2 of 2

Cardinal Kevin Farrell delivered the news with a heartfelt message. The statement said: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

“At 7.35am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”

The message went on to say: “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

His passing marks the end of a deeply impactful papacy, defined by humility, compassion, and a commitment to social justice.

Pope Francis made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday

Pope Francis’ Last Public Appearance Before His Passing

At the time of his meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla, Pope Francis was in recovery from a severe case of double pneumonia.

He had been discharged from the hospital on March 23, after spending five weeks fighting the life-threatening illness that had affected both lungs.

On Easter Sunday, April 20, the Pope made what would be his final public appearance—attending a blessing at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

King Charles, too, has been dealing with health challenges over the past year. He remains in treatment for cancer and recently experienced a minor setback, which required a short stay in the hospital.

The King reportedly faced “temporary side-effects” from the treatment, prompting the palace to delay his official duties briefly. Fortunately, the issue was described as “minor,” and he was able to resume his responsibilities just a week later.
