Part 1 of 3

The Call I Will Never Forget

The first contraction strong enough to frighten me came while I was standing beside the kitchen counter in our home outside Richmond, Virginia.

I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant, and although my doctor had warned me our son could arrive at any time, I had convinced myself I still had several days.

Then my water broke.

My husband, Mason Hollowell, was supposed to be home.

Instead, he was two hours away in Charlottesville at an elaborate sixtieth-birthday dinner for his mother, Loretta.

I called him immediately.

Music and laughter filled the background when he answered.

“Mason, I think the baby is coming.”

There was a pause.

“Tonight?”

I almost laughed at the question.

“Yes, Mason. Tonight. My water broke, and the contractions are getting closer together. I need you to come home.”

Before he could respond, I heard Loretta asking what was happening.

Then her voice came clearly through the phone.

“Tell her not to ruin the evening. Women have babies every day.”

My stomach tightened for a reason that had nothing to do with labor.

“Mason, please.”

He sighed.

“Caroline, Mom has been planning this dinner for months.”

“And we have been expecting this baby for nine months.”

Another contraction forced me to grip the counter.

I heard him talking quietly to his mother.

Then he returned to the phone.

“Call the hospital. Get a rideshare if you have to. You can handle this.”

I could barely believe him.

“You’re seriously staying there?”

His answer came with an irritation that changed something inside me forever.

“Handle it yourself, Caroline. Stop making everything so dramatic.”

Then he hung up.

The Person I Hadn’t Called in Two Years

My neighbor drove me to St. Catherine Medical Center.

By the time we reached the maternity entrance, I was frightened, exhausted, and painfully aware that the empty chair beside me should have belonged to my husband.

A nurse asked whether anyone else could come.

I almost said no.

Then I remembered a phone number I knew by heart but had avoided dialing for nearly two years.

My father’s.

The relationship between my father and me had always been complicated.

His name was Malcolm Waverly.

To most people, Malcolm Waverly was the founder of Waverly Strategic Group, an investment company whose name regularly appeared in business publications.

To me, he was simply Dad.

A brilliant, stubborn, excessively protective man whom I had spent years trying to prove I could live without.

Mason didn’t know the full truth about him.

I had built my professional life using my late mother’s surname, Bennett. When Mason and I met, I told him my father and I were distant and that he had worked in business.

Mason never asked many questions.

I never volunteered the answers.

Now, sitting in a hospital wheelchair, I called Dad.

He answered immediately.

“Caroline?”

I tried to speak, but my voice broke.

“Dad, I’m at the hospital.”

His tone changed instantly.

“Which hospital?”

That was all he asked.

Not why I was calling after so much silence.

Not where my husband was.

Not whether I had finally admitted he had been right about something.

Just where I was.

The Man Who Actually Showed Up

Forty minutes later, Dad walked into my room wearing dark trousers, an ordinary blue shirt, and the old charcoal coat he had owned for years.

No expensive suit.

No assistant.

No driver following behind him.

Just my father.

He came directly to my bedside and took my hand.

“I’m here.”

Those two words nearly broke me.

Mason had promised me for months that he would be beside me when our child arrived.

Yet the man whose calls I had ignored was the one sitting beside me.

Dad stayed through everything.

Whenever I became frightened, he reminded me to breathe.

Whenever I asked whether Mason had called, Dad checked my phone without criticizing him.

Hours passed.

Mason never came.

Just before dawn, my son, Noah Bennett Hollowell, entered the world.

When the nurse placed him against me, every sound in the room seemed to disappear.

He was tiny and warm, with dark hair and a little wrinkled forehead.

Dad stood beside the bed crying openly.

I had seen Malcolm Waverly negotiate deals worth hundreds of millions without changing expression.

But holding his grandson destroyed every defense he had.

“May I?” he whispered.

I nodded.

He carefully lifted Noah into his arms.

“Hello, little man. I’m your grandfather.”

My phone buzzed moments later.

Mason had finally sent a message.

“Mom loved her birthday. I’ll come home Monday. Please don’t turn this into another argument.”

I stared at those words while my father held my newborn son.

That was when I knew my marriage had changed permanently.

Three Days Later

Mason came home on Monday afternoon.

Dad was sitting in our living room with Noah sleeping against his chest while I folded baby blankets nearby.

The front door opened.

“Caroline?”

Mason entered dragging a suitcase.

Then he saw Dad.

He stopped.

The suitcase tipped sideways.

His face lost its color.

I had forgotten that Mason knew Malcolm Waverly’s face.

Almost everyone in his industry did.

He simply had no idea that Malcolm Waverly was my father.

“What is Malcolm Waverly doing in our house?”

Dad looked calmly at him.

Then Mason noticed the baby in his arms.

His expression became even more stunned.

“Why is Malcolm Waverly holding my son?”

Dad glanced at me before answering.

“Perhaps that is a question you should ask your wife.”

Mason slowly turned toward me.

“Caroline… what is going on?”

“He’s my father.”

For several seconds, Mason said nothing.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

His shock quickly became anger.

“You never told me.”

I almost admired the audacity.
