King Charles has formally removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor’s title of “Prince” and his “His Royal Highness” (HRH) style through a Letters Patent issued under the Great Seal of the Realm.

The decision was confirmed last week by Buckingham Palace, which said:

“His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence.”

The move follows years of controversy surrounding Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Virginia Giuffre accused the Duke — who is now 65 — of sexually abusing her on three occasions while she was a minor, after being trafficked by Epstein. Andrew denied the allegations, but later reached an out-of-court settlement with Giuffre in 2022.

Though the settlement did not include an admission of guilt, the fallout led to him being stripped of his HRH style and numerous honorary military titles.

Further titles were removed last month, just days before the posthumous release of Giuffre’s memoir — published after she took her own life earlier this year — in which she described alleged encounters with Andrew in detail. At that time, he was also stripped of his Duke of York title.

Last week’s statement confirmed that Andrew will now lose his remaining residence privileges as well.

“Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation,” Buckingham Palace said. “These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him. Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”

The King’s decision to finalize his brother’s removal through Letters Patent was made official in The Gazette, the UK’s public record, published by the Crown Office on 6 November 2025.

The notice read:

“The King has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title, or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”

With the issuance of this decree, Andrew has now been formally and completely stripped of all remaining royal honours and titles — marking an unprecedented censure within the modern British monarchy.
